Fantagraphics Bookstore Best of 2020

Time for a belated list of 2020 favorites from Fantagraphics Bookstore curator Larry Reid. This was a tumultuous year and the independent comix community was hit particularly hard. New titles were delayed and some were simply overlooked. In the struggle to keep the bookstore viable, I missed a lot of new titles completely. As a result, this list is far from comprehensive. Still, some stellar work appeared despite the dire circumstances. Below, in no particular order, is a baker’s dozen of the books that most appealed to me Daniel Clowes: Original Art. The latest in Fantagraphics’ series of deluxe studio…

What’s in Store: Top Comix of 2017

It’s come time for Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery curator Larry Reid to name my choices for the best comix of the past year. This list is customarily limited to the top 10 publications plus a handful of honorable mentions. This being a banner year for contemporary comix, I’ve expanded my subjective selections to an even dozen, together with an equal number of alternatives – any one of which could be included among the best.    12. Chris Ware: Monograph This comprehensive collection of Ware’s art, comix, and ephemera does justice to the remarkable career of one of the most innovative…

We couldn’t help but notice over the years that calling this Free Comic Book Day seems to discourage patrons from purchasing any products. This situation has been accentuated coming on the heels of successful celebrations…

Digital Wednesday

This week we are featuring two new collections — one assembling short stories from a modern-day marvel and another a continuation of Crockett Johnson’s great 20th century strip. Noah Van Sciver’s Disquiet highlights a dozen short comics by the acclaimed cartoonist behind Fante Bukowski and The Hypo. In this book you have “The Death of Elijah Lovejoy,” on Midwestern abolitionists in the 1830s; “The Lizard who Laughed,” about a painfully dysfunctional reunion; and “Punks Vs. Lizards,” an anarchic, darkly comic piece of absurdity that blends Quadrophenia with Jurassic Park. Find Disquiet on comiXology and Google Play.        …
