What’s in Store: Jack Kamen’s Lasting Legacy

Jack Kamen’s classic stories in EC comics like Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science, Haunt of Fear, Modern Love, and Weird Fantasy left a lasting impression on midcentury American youth. They sold in the millions, but were vilified by child psychologists, preachers and politicians, who claimed these comic books were the cause of juvenile delinquency, leading to their ultimate demise. Kamen’s legacy has been preserved in the EC Artists’ Library from Fantagraphics Books with four collections: Zero Hour, Forty Whacks, Daddy Lost His Head, and Martian Monster. This being a banner year for contemporary comix, I’ll be more expansive this time, listing my top twenty. This exercise is subjective by nature. I try to avoid the term “best,” preferring instead to name the books that most appealed to me.  20. Doukhobor Comics by Rose Driver. What’s not to like about an eccentric anarchist/nudist/arsonist religious cult that, with the help of Leo Tolstoy, made their way from Russia to the Pacific…
