As Banned Books Week comes to an end, we’d like to join in this annual celebration of free speech and creative freedom by weighing in on Fantagraphics Books’ publishing philosophy as it relates to publishing the kinds of books that make the lists of banned books. The American Library Association listed three graphic novels in the top ten banned books in 2014, plus a prose book illustrated by Ellen Forney, which almost qualifies. Heretical Graphic Designer Art Chantry at Fantagraphics Bookstore

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to announce the global debut of Art Chantry Speaks: A Heretic’s History of 20th Century Graphic Design from Port Townsend’s Feral House press. The reception, book signing and companion exhibition by one of the country’s most influential graphic designers opens Saturday, July 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Photographer and Writer Seth Kushner Passes Away

We at Fantagraphics offer our deepest condolences to the family of Seth Kushner, who passed away on May 17th, 2015. Seth was a deeply talented and inspirational photographer, writer and friend of comics who was able to capture a depth and creativity through his portraiture that few could. Best illustrated through the collaborative book, Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origin of American Comics, Kushner told an evocative story of his subjects like Jaime Hernandez, Peter Bagge, and Dash Shaw through his photography.
