Mayor’s Arts Awards

Jack Davis 1924–2016
Jack Burton Davis Jr. (b. December 2, 1924, Atlanta, Georgia; d. July 27, 2016) defined mid-century humor cartooning with his inimitable, rubbery style, which ably satirized any genre. Incredibly prolific, the Navy veteran’s instantly recognizable comics and illustrations graced assorted EC comics, advertisements, TV Guide covers, film posters (such as the one for It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World). He also provided art to his alma mater the University of Georgia until his passing. Davis was one of the original artists behind Mad magazine, and was a contributor and ownership partner in other Harvey Kurtzman-edited humor magazines, like Humbug…

What’s in Store: Love and Loss
The Fantagraphics Bookstore family mourns the loss of our dear friend and colleague Geneviève Castrée Elverum, who succumbed to a year-long battle with cancer on Saturday. A talented musician, artist, and cartoonist, Geneviève appeared at the store to perform at the Love & Rockets 30th anniversary celebration in December of 2012. The following year the store hosted a book launch party for her graphic novel Susceptible with an art show, slide talk, and book signing. Together with her husband, musician Phil Elverum, she organized the Unknown Music Festival in her adapted hometown of Anacortes, Washington. They graciously invited our bookstore to participate…
