Comics occupy a fringe space or edge-land, existing between high and low brow, image and text, and the individually or collectively created. This (in) between space affords comics the possibility of experimentation while simultaneously allowing the art form to consolidate itself as the seed bank of corporate entertainment. Come and join us in a border-crossing, genre-hopping, fringe-exciting talk with authors Charles Glaubitz and Pepe Rojo (Nos Toy) at the Athenaeum Art Center, Saturday August 12 at 6:30 pm.

Fantagraphics Bookstore presents Michael Dormer and the Legend of Hot Curl with surf sounds by Pleasure Island. The late Michael Dormer is synonymous with the California surf counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. The post-World War II influence of Beatnik poetry, jazz, and art interpretation around the California Coast created a revolution in the Orange County surf world, and no one defined the visual style of this movement more than Dormer. An exhibition of original work opens on Saturday, August 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, with music by Pleasure Island at 7:00.
