Virtual: Shira Spector (Red Rock Baby Candy), Illustrating Identity: Visual Language & Queer Stories, The Word on the Street

Virtual

Celebrate the stories that connect us at The Word On The Street Toronto’s 2021 virtual festival of storytelling, ideas and imagination. About this event: The Word On The Street presents Illustrating Identity: Visual Language & Queer Stories, in partnership with the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. An image is worth 1,000 words, or so the saying goes. What does illustration bring to queer stories? There was a time where the only queer signifiers were subtle visual clues, and visual presentation is still a huge facet of people's identities in the modern era. Join four modern illustrators as they discuss queer stories...

Toronto, Canada: Shira Spector (Red Rock Baby Candy) at Page & Panel

Page & Panel: The TCAF Shop 789 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Shira Spector is a Jewish Canadian lesbian cartoonist who earned a BFA in Fibres (with Distinction) from Concordia University in Montreal. Her work has been widely anthologized and exhibited in Toronto where she is transplanted with her wife and son and a succession of rescue dogs. Shira draws inspiration from theatricality in all its forms whether found in nature or the best parts of aqua musicals. Believing that play and poetry are not luxuries, and that opportunities to embrace the fantastical belong to daily living, she accepts defying the mundane as her personal mission in life. She is the recipient...

Virtual: Simon Hanselmann (Crisis Zone) at The Lakes International Comic Art Festival

Virtual

Best known for his Megg, Mogg and Owl series of books, Simon has a unique perspective on life, art and storytelling. His work is simultaneously hilarious and profoundly unsettling. Although the title characters of Megg and Mogg are a witch and a cat, like the popular 1970s children’s book heroes Meg and Mog, there the similarity ends. In Hanselmann’s stories, the pair are, in his words, ‘depressed drug users struggling with life’. Simon’s work has brought him two Eisner Awards and the prestigious Angoulême International Comics Festival Award for Best Series. Most recently, he has been serialising a pandemic-themed story...

In a questionably-distant future, the world’s elite use the ocean planet Lure as a luxury vacation hub—but when climate change threatens Earth’s long-term habitability, many of those who can afford it move to Lure for good. When artist Jo Spartz is invited to Lure to collaborate on a large-scale public art installation, it seems like the chance of a lifetime until she stumbles across a nefarious plot by her corporate benefactors and feels...
