Fantagraphics Year in Review 2023

2023 was an incredible year for our books! We’ve had the privilege of publishing Daniel Clowes since 1985 and we were thrilled to release his newest, Monica, in October. Rich with visual detail, an impeccable ear for language and dialogue, and thrilling twists, Monica is a multilayered masterpiece in comics form that alludes to many of the genres that have defined the medium — war, romance, horror, crime, the supernatural, etc. — but in a mysterious, uncategorizable, and quintessentially Clowesian way that rewards multiple readings. Reviewers have described it as “a masterpiece” (The New York Times), “an emotionally resonant and unforgettable opus” (Library Journal), and “recalling the narrative pyrotechnics of Nabokov or Pynchon” (Forbes)–in short, it’s an utterly unique and unforgettable read!

We’ve published a wide range of stories this year, everything from the dark, absurdist humor of Simon Hanselmann and Josh Pettinger in Werewolf Jones & Sons Deluxe Summer Fun Annual, to K. Wroten’s fantastical and philosophical critique of consumer culture, Eden II, to Cathy Malkasian’s surrealistic, feminist allegory, The Heavy Bright!

And we’ve been fortunate enough to publish collections from artists all over the world: Godhead 2 by Ho Che Anderson (Canada), Spa by Erik Svetoft (Sweden), We’re All Just Fine by Ana Penyas (Spain), Ms. Davis: A Graphic Biography by Amazing Améziane and Sybille Titeux de la Croix (France), Night Terror by John Kenn Mortensen (Denmark), Daughters of Snow and Cinders by Núria Tamarit (Spain), Listen, Beautiful Márcia by Marcello Quintanilha (Brazil), Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies by Léonie Bischoff (Belgium), Okinawa by Susumu Higa (Okinawa), Starseeds 3 by Charles Glaubitz (Mexico), Totem by Laura Pérez (Spain), and Milky Way by Miguel Vila (Italy), to name a few!

In addition to our classic fiction offerings, we’ve also published a number of notable non-fiction titles this year. Graphic memoirs from Briana Loewinsohn (Ephemera: A Memoir), Natalie Norris (Dear Mini: A Graphic Memoir, Book One), and M.S. Harkness (Time Under Tension) are all remarkable examples of the range and depth of storytelling possibilities comics offer!

Below is the full list of all the spectacular books we published in 2023–thank you for your continued support of independent publishing!
