Comics Arts Conference #5: Lassoing the Truth: Marston Versus Wertham in the Wonder Woman War

10:30am – 11:30am Psychologist William Moulton Marston created the world’s most famous female superhero. Using outdated examples and falsified evidence, psychiatrist Fredric Wertham attacked both Wonder Woman and the deceased Marston in his book Seduction of the Innocent. Doctors Travis Langley and Mara Wood (Wonder Woman Psychology: Lassoing the Truth) call together a panel of experts to examine how one crusader’s fight with a ghost affected both comics and comics studies: Phil Jimenez (Wonder Woman), Trina Robbins (The Legend of Wonder Woman), Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch), Alan Kistler (comics historian), and Mike Madrid (The Supergirls), with special guest Christie Marston (Wonder Woman Network and Family Museum). John Stanley, Giving Life to Little Lulu

6:00-7:00pm Little Lulu-Eisner-winning author Bill Schelly and Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth give a slide show presentation on the work of John Stanley, the creative genius who wrote and drew Little Lulu for her first 15 years in comic books. Stanley took Saturday Evening Post cartoonist Marge Buell’s scrappy Lulu Moppet and turned her into a genuine Feminist icon, and the star of one of the best-selling comics of the 1950s.

1:00 – 2:00pm Abraham Riesman of Vulture discusses the breadth of humor and satire possible in the medium of comics. He’s joined by Mimi Pond, whose fictionalized memoir The Customer Is Always Wrongis rich with the slang and jokes of 1970s Bay Area counterculture; R. Sikoryak, whose satirical takes on the 2016 presidential election online and tech jargon in Terms and Conditions have delighted readers everywhere; Gemma Correll, whose relatable comics about anxiety and pets appear on The Guardian and are collected in The Worrier’s Guide to Life ; and Simon Hanselmann, whose meticulously watercolored stoner witch comics (published on his tumblr and in books such as Megahex and One More Year) are soaked in a black humor.
