2022 was a banner year of releases for Fantagraphics! Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez have helped define both Fantagraphics as a publisher and literary comics as a whole for over four decades. We had the privilege of celebrating the 40th anniversary of our flagship series Love and Rockets by releasing Love and Rockets: The First Fifty boxed set (link).
To continue to honor the foundation of Fantagraphics, we released books by comics legends like One Beautiful Spring Day by Jim Woodring, Upside Dawn by Jason, and Maverix and Lunatix: Icons of Underground Comix by Drew Friedman. Plus, a new softcover edition of the Fantagraphics seminal series The Complete Eightball by Daniel Clowes.
We published amazing comics from European cartoonists including Schappi by Anna Haifisch, Metax by Antoine Cossé, The Forest by Thomas Ott, Boris the Potato Child by Anne Simon, Golden Boy: Beethoven’s Youth by Mikael Ross, and Slash Them All by Antoine Maillard. Plus, we were excited to release books by two of our favorite Australian cartoonists: Below Ambition by Simon Hanselmann and Men I Trust by Tommi Parrish.
As ever, we were proud to present works from some of the best contemporary American cartoonists like Ultrasound by Conor Stechschulte, Dog Biscuits by Alex Graham, Keeping Two by Jordan Crane, How To Make a Monster: Ugly Memories of Chicago from a South Side Escapee by Casanova Frankenstein, Halcyon by Ron Regé Jr., and Who Will Make The Pancakes: Five Stories by Megan Kelso. And two great works of comics journalism with Invisible Wounds: Graphic Journalism by Jess Ruliffson and Living and Dying in America: A Daily Chronicle 2020-2022 by Steve Brodner.
