They’ll discuss their charming graphic memoir Hogbook and Lazer Eyes with popular podcasters Brad and Lisa Gullickson (Comic Book Couples Counseling).

Friday, July 26th at 11:30 am in Room 10: Focus on Braba: A Brazilian Comics Anthology: There is a thriving arts and comics scene in Brazil, and Fantagraphics is proud to pair with MINO to publish Braba, an extraordinary collection of 13 short stories created by 16 pioneering Brazilian cartoonists. Artist Pedro Cobiaco and artist and curator Rafael Grampá (Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham) will discuss the work, with a Q&A to follow.

Friday, July 26th at 12:00 pm in Room 4: Spotlight on Rick Marschall: Rick Marschall has been active in the world of comics since the 1960s as a cartoonist, historian, collector, comics editor of three newspaper syndicates, editor at Marvel Comics (founder of EPIC), writer of Disney Comics, representative of European graphic-novel publishers, and teacher at SVA and other colleges. He was the editor of Nemo magazine, co-founder of Hogan’s Alley, and the author of 75 books, most on pop culture and comics. He will be interviewed by Gary Groth, co-founder of Fantagraphics Books and former editor of The Comics Journal. They will discuss Rick’s career and share thoughts on the past, present, and future of the comics medium.

Friday, July 26th at 4:30 pm in Room 26AB: Joe Matt Tribute Panel: Joe Matt (Peepshow) was a cartoonist like no other and is sorely missed by fans and friends alike. Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Sammy Harkham (Blood of the Virgin), and Brian Doherty (Dirty Pictures) discuss his work, his legacy, and more with Eric Reynolds (VP and associate publisher, Fantagraphics).

Saturday, July 27th at 10:00 am in Grand 10 & 11, Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina: Best Friends Forever Panel: Best friends Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Lunar New Year Love Story), Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Guts), Thien Pham (Family Style, Sumo), Briana Loewinsohn (Ephemera, Raised by Ghosts), and Julia Wertz (Impossible People, Drinking at the Movies) discuss the joys and terrors of writing about best friends in their comics.

Saturday, July 27th at 3:00 pm in Room 29AB: Inheritance and Legacy: Nonfiction Comics: What do we inherit from our forebears? A legacy can be anything, whether it’s a garden passed down through generations or recipes that connect us to home, no matter where we are in the world. Briana Loewinsohn (Ephemera, Raised by Ghosts), Comic-Con special guest Thien Pham (Family Style: Memories of an American from Vietnam), and Mariah-Rose Marie (Cook Like Your Ancestors: An Illustrated Guide to Intuitive Cooking with Recipes From Around the World) discuss their work with Gene Luen Yang (Lunar New Year Love Story).

Saturday, July 27th at 4:00 pm in Room 25ABC: Spotlight on Daniel Clowes: Daniel Clowes style is recognized for its meticulous detail, emotional depth, and engagement with the absurdities of the everyday, cementing his status as one of the most influential figures in the comics medium. He’ll be discussing his newest book, Monica (winner of the 2024 Fauve D’Or at Angoulême Comics Festival, longlisted for the 2024 Pen/Faulkner Award for Fiction) with his editor, Eric Reynolds (VP and associate publisher at Fantagraphics).

2024 Eisner Hall of Fame Judges’ Choices:

Kim Deitch (1944- ): Pioneer underground cartoonist Kim Deitch’s best-known character is Waldo the Cat, a fictional 1930s-era animated cat who stars in the seminal Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Shroud of Waldo, Alias the Cat, and various other strips and books. Kim’s other works include Shadowlands, Reincarnation Stories, Beyond the Pale, and Deitch’s Pictorama, a collaboration with brothers Simon and Seth. Art Spiegelman has called Deitch “the best kept secret in American comics.” Deitch was co-founder of the Cartoonists Co-op Press (1973–1974) and has taught at the School for Visual Arts in New York. He received Comic-Con’s Inkpot Award in 2008.

Gary Groth (1954- ): Gary Groth is an American comic book editor, publisher, and critic. Active as a fan, while a teenager he published Fantastic Fanzine and in the early 1970s organized Metro Con in the Washington, DC area. In 1976 he co-founded Fantagraphics Books with Mike Catron and Kim Thompson and served as editor-in-chief of The Comics Journal.
