The Pasadena, CA LitFest is awarding Jaime Hernandez a lifetime achievement award for excellence in literary arts! We couldn't agree more with this honor, and Jaime will receive the award on June 4th, in conversation with Lalo Alcaraz, creator of the first nationally syndicated, politically themed Latino daily comic strip, La Cucaracha, seen in scores of newspapers including the Los Angeles Times.
From Henry Art Gallery: Join us for an afternoon of cartooning and conversation led by Shary Flennikan, a longtime member of the underground comics collective the Air Pirates, and Larry Reid, curator of Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. In the first part of this two-hour workshop, they will discuss the Air Pirates’ colorful and contentious history with the use appropriated imagery, and the semiotics of such cultural icons as Disney’s Mickey Mouse.
