SUMMARY:Gainesville\, FL: Scott Camil at Matheson History Museum
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to welcome anti-war and environmental activist Scott Camil back to the Matheson to discuss his brand-new graphic novel “Winter Warrior” (Fantagraphics\, 2019)\, which was illustrated by cartoonist Eve Gilbert. A book signing will follow Mr. Camil’s presentation. \nThe year is 1965. Fresh out of high school and gung-ho to serve his country\, Scott Camil joins the marines and soon finds himself in the thick of combat in Vietnam. He can never forget what he witnesses there: corrupt and incompetent leaders\, the constant\, sudden death of his close friends\, the sadistic rape and slaughter of Vietnamese women and children—all of which bears heavily on his conscience. Returning to civilian life\, Camil adopts a righteous cause: tell the American people about what’s really going on in Vietnam. \nThrough the unflinching personal journey of a hardened marine turned dogged anti-war activist\, “Winter Warrior” reveals the brutal reality of the Vietnam war and the bleak political reality on the domestic front. Cartoonist Eve Gilbert renders Camil’s story with empathy\, nuance\, and a dash of humor\, her impressionistic imagery a perfect complement to his blunt words. As the American military continues to wage war throughout the globe\, Camil’s anti-authoritarian attitude and fearless whistleblowing is as vital today as it was then. \nScott Camil is a Vietnam veteran known worldwide for his anti-war and environmental activism. He made a name for himself as an outspoken participant in the boldly anti-war Winter Soldier Investigation in 1971 (and appeared in the 1972 documentary “Winter Soldier”)\, and subsequently joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and became a leader within the organization. Since 1987\, Camil has been President of the Gainesville Chapter of the Veterans for Peace. Also notable for his environmental activism\, Camil serves as Political Chair of the Suwannee St-Johns Sierra Club and founded Stand By Our Plan\, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting wetlands from commercial development. He lives in Gainesville\, Florida\, with his wife. \nThis event is sponsored in part by Visit Gainesville / Alachua County\, FL and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.on

SUMMARY:Seattle\, WA: Gina Siciliano at the Seattle Arts Museum

SUMMARY:Brooklyn\, NY: Ben Passmore\, Jérôme Tubiana\, and Mark Alan Stamaty at Brooklyn Book Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:A psychedelic chronicle of 1970s New York paves the road for even trippier Washington D.C. satire; a meditation on casual bigotry feeds a gentrification horror story; and a daily conversation in an African hotel blossoms into the epic survival story of one of Guantanamo Bay’s youngest detainees. Ben Passmore (BTTM FDRS)\, Jérôme Tubiana (Guántanamo Kid)\, and Mark Alan Stamaty (MacDoodle Street) discuss the art of stepping outside reality in order to depict it. Moderated by Sarah Glidden (Rolling Blackouts).

DESCRIPTION:The annual SPX comics and graphic arts festival presents the best and brightest established creators in independent comics. SUMMARY:Portland: Ulli Lust at Floating World Comics
DESCRIPTION:Ulli Lust\, author of the LA Times Book Prize-winning graphic memoir Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life\, joins us to celebrate the launch of her new book\, How I Tried to Be a Good Person. \nHow I Tried to Be a Good Person is a story of sexual obsession\, gender conflict\, and self-liberation\, told with an honesty few cartoonists are capable of. This powerfully vulnerable graphic memoir follows Lust’s life as a young\, enthusiastic anarchist making her way in 1990s Vienna. In the hopes of fulfilling all of her romantic needs\, Lust enters into a tumultuous love triangle with two men: the “perfect companion” Georg\, an actor twenty years her elder\, and the “perfect lover” Kimata\, a Nigerian man-about-town. As her relationships with the two men evolve\, jealousy increasingly mounts and the ensuing violent emotions leave her worried for her life. \nUlli will present and sign her book at Floating World on Wednesday\, July 17th at 6pm. See you there! \nWHO: Ulli Lust\nWHAT: How I Tried To Be A Good Person book signing\nWHEN: Wednesday July 17\, 6-8pm\nWHERE: Floating World Comics\, 400 NW Couch St. \nUlli Lust was born in 1967 in Vienna; in 1995\, she moved to Berlin\, where she studied graphic design and now lives as a cartoonist. She is best known for her award-winning graphic memoir Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life (2013)\, in which she chronicles one rebellious teenaged summer spent hitching across Italy. SUMMARY:Seattle: Ulli Lust & Zak Sally at Goethe Pop Up Seattle
DESCRIPTION:Join one of Berlin’s most lauded comics artists\, Ulli Lust\, and Minneapolis artist and musician Zak Sally for a reading and discussion of their recent work. \nIn “Wie ich versuchte\, ein guter Mensch zu sein” (How I Tried to Be a Good Person)\, Ulli Lust takes the readers on the hilarious yet emotionally complex journeys of a young Viennese artist torn between two men. The graphic novel is a powerful memoir that blends personal experiences—stories of sexual obsession\, gender conflict\, and self-liberation—with broader themes\, such as female empowerment\, alternative family arrangements\, domestic violence\, and refugee policies. Lust presents her female character neither as a victim nor a perpetrator\, but as a woman overwhelmed by her various roles as partner\, lover\, and mother. \nZak Sally reads from his memoir “Folrath”\, an account of the time when he forged a Greyhound bus pass and traveled the American West with no destination in sight. Sally self-published his first comic zine on a photocopier at the age of thirteen and has been making comics and zines ever since. His work shares with Lust revealing autobiographical details of youthful wanderlust with little regard for consequences. \nAttendance is free\, but space is limited so we kindly ask everyone to register in advance via Eventbrite. \nThe event is co-presented with Fantagraphics Books Seattle.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles: Viken Berberian at Skylight Books
DESCRIPTION:A young man’s arrogance and ambition collide with revolutionary politics in a visually groundbreaking graphic novel. \nEnter Yerevan\, the capital of Armenia — a city in ruins. Wrecking balls swing wildly and cement trucks race through congested streets. Aspiring architect Frunz and his father\, the renowned builder known as Mr. Cement\, plan to level Yerevan’s historic landmarks and flood the city with Trumpian high-rises. But this plan outrages the citizens of Yerevan\, who rise up in Revolution. Amid the ensuing chaos\, only one thing is certain: Frunz must brave the streets swarming with rebels in search of the Golden Mean. \nWritten by Viken Berberian with his signature originality and verve and drawn with audacious compositions\, delirious colors\, and a kinetic expressionistic technique by the acclaimed painter and illustrator Yann Kebbi\, The Structure is Rotten\, Comrade is a formally innovative and politically resonant work\, by turns prescient\, punchy\, cautionary\, and fearless. \nPraise for The Structure Is Rotten\, Comrade: \n“A painfully beautiful book.” –Etgar Keret \n“Frunz’s love of cement is contagious.” –Leanne Shapton \n“Kebbi’s outlandish\, raw colored-pencil art [is a perfect match for] Berberian’s sardonic voice and apocalyptic sense of humor. This bizarre art-comic will tickle intellectual funny bones.”–Publishers Weekly \n“Viken Berberian’s ruined landscapes find synergistic manifestation in Yann Kebbi’s art\, filled with frantic scrawls of riotous colored pencils and markers. Revolts – against subjugation\, occupation\, blind entitlement\, utter greed – burst forth with much force…” —Booklist\, Smithsonian  \nViken Berberian\, a writer and essayist\, is the author of the novels The Cyclist (2002\, Simon & Schuster) and Das Kapital (2007\, Simon & Schuster)\, and of a graphic novel\, The Structure is Rotten\, Comrade (2019\, Fantagraphics Books\, Actes Sud)\, with French illustrator Yann Kebbi. \n***Please note: Viken will be selling his novels The Cyclist and Das Kapital at the event. Proceeds from the sale of these two books will go to the Los Angeles Conservancy.
