SUMMARY:Seattle: Hey Lady #7 Release at Fantagraphics Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to host a release party and art exhibition for Regina Schilling’s Hey Lady #7. The new issue focuses on Sylvia Rivera\, a civil rights pioneer who was a crucial voice for people of color\, transgendered\, and low-income communities throughout her life. \nHey Lady is a colorful celebration of women’s contributions to global art and culture. Olympia resident Regina Schilling selects a subject for each book and invites women artists worldwide to contribute portraits. Past personalities include artist and musician Yoko Ono\, actress Nichelle Nichols\, Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling\, musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and artists Leonor Fini and Yayoi Kusama. The results are remarkably revealing. Each issue includes a brief biography and a button affixed to the cover. DIY publishing and contemporary feminist art at its finest. \nThe event coincides with the festive Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic neighborhood

SUMMARY:Seattle: Jim Woodring Exhibit Opens
DESCRIPTION:Jim Woodring: The Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept\nJANUARY 21 – APRIL 16\, 2017\n\nAt once knowable and entirely strange\, the work of Seattle-based artist and cartoonist Jim Woodring (American\, born 1952) defies categorization\, shifting between graphic novel and fine art\, reality and hallucinatory vision. The Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept\, a series newly commissioned by the Frye Art Museum\, was created using an oversize dip pen designed and crafted by Woodring himself. The resulting ink drawings demonstrate the ways that unconventional tools can shape an artist’s practice\, generating new technical challenges in tandem with unexpected creative rewards. \nThese expansive compositions employ a visual language drawn from the artist’s dreams and imagination as well as from vintage American cartoons. In describing the curiosity that fuels his process\, Woodring explains\, “One common thread that runs through all my work is an interest in and a search for hidden forces—the invisible world. There is very much a questing\, searching\, seeking quality to everything I do. Each picture I draw is an attempt to answer one question and ask another one at the same time.” \nThe Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept is a purposefully absurd yet evocative title that hints at the enigmatic events depicted within the series. In each self-contained frame\, Woodring renders swirling amalgamations of phantasmagorical creatures and organic matter\, avoiding recognizable characters and narratives. In doing so\, the artist delves deeper into the surreal and fantastical universe that is central to his greater project. \nJim Woodring: The Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept is organized by the Frye Art Museum. Support for this exhibition is provided by Vulcan Inc. Additional generous support is provided by Seattle Office of Arts & Culture\, ArtsFund\, the Frye Foundation\, and Frye Art Museum members. \nMedia sponsorship is provided by City Arts.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn: Kevin Avery at BookCourt
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Avery presents his new release\, It’s All One Case: The Illustrated Ross Macdonald Archives. He’ll be joined by the book’s designer to discuss the process\, and works of Ross Macdonald. \nAbout the book: \nIn 1976\, the critic Paul Nelson spent several weeks interviewing his literary hero\, legendary detective writer Ross Macdonald. Beginning in the late 1940s with his shadowy creation\, ruminating private eye Lew Archer\, Macdonald had followed in the footsteps of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler\, but ultimately elevated the form to a new level. “We talked about everything imaginable\,” Nelson wrote—including Macdonald’s often meager beginnings; his dual citizenship; writers\, painters\, music\, books\, and movies he admired; how he used symbolism to change detective writing; his own novels and why Archer was not the most important character — “my God\, everything.” It’s All One Case provides an open door to Macdonald at his most unguarded. The book is far more than a collection of never-before-published interviews\, though. Published in a handsome\, oversized format\, it is a visual history of Macdonald’s professional career\, illustrated with rare and select items from one of the world’s largest private archives of Macdonald collectibles. Featuring in full color the covers of the various editions of Macdonald’s more than two dozen books\, facsimile reproductions of pages from his manuscripts\, magazine spreads\, and many never before seen photos of Macdonald and his friends (such as Kurt Vonnegut)\, including those by celebrated photojournalist Jill Krementz. It’s All One Case is an intellectual delight and a visual feast\, a fitting tribute to Macdonald’s distinguished career.
