SUMMARY:Bellingham: Jim Blanchard at Comics Place
DESCRIPTION:Come meet Jim Blanchard. He’ll be at Comics Place signing your autograph journals and selling his books\, comics and magazines. \nTexas-born artist Jim Blanchard has lived all across the U.S.A. and in Norway. From 1982–1988\, he edited and published the punk zine Blatch. In 1987\, he moved to Seattle\, Washington\, where he’s been an illustrator\, cartoonist\, and designer. He now lives in Bellingham with his wife Diana and dog Henry. Fantagraphics Books recently published a coffee table book of his work entitled Visual Abuse. \nVisual Abuse (available at Comics Place or Fantagraphics Press) is an outrageous and optically rich collection of the halcyon days of illustrator and cartoonist Jim Blanchard\, whose work from 1982–2002 intersected with punk rock\, grunge\, psychedelia\, alternative comics\, “zine” culture\, portraiture\, and “girlie” art. The book gathers Blanchard’s different eras and disparate art styles into a cohesive whole. After self-publishing the punk rock/art fanzine Blatch in Oklahoma\, Jim brought his act to Seattle\, Washington in 1987\, where the nascent “grunge” rock scene was poised to erupt. Visual Abuse assembles the best of Blanchard’s LP covers\, posters and flyers from the hardcore punk era through grunge\, including iconic Black Flag\, Nirvana\, and Soundgarden posters. Augmenting the posters are exclusive photographs from the shows\, including shots by famed photographer Charles Peterson. Also chronicled are page after page of Blanchard’s obsessive psychedelic art\, bizarre sociopathic comics\, exquisitely detailed pop culture portraits\, twisted “glamour girl” art\, and some tongue-waggin’ eyeball-poppin’ freaks\, making this an overwhelming and long-overdue compendium by an elusive\, dedicated\, and complex artist.

SUMMARY:Columbus: We Told You So w Tom Spurgeon
DESCRIPTION:It’s hard to imagine the field of comics being as diverse and vibrant as it is today without publisher Fantagraphics Books. Founded in 1976 by Gary Groth and Mike Catron (joined by the late Kim Thompson in 1977)\, Fantagraphics began by publishing the collector’s magazine Amazing Heroes before beginning to publish comics in 1979. During its existence\, the company has published and championed such alternative comics greats as Dan Clowes\, the Hernandez Brothers\, Jessica Abel\, and Charles Burns\, along with reprints of classic comics and the influential The Comics Journal. In We Told You So: Comics as Art\, comics historian and critic Tom Spurgeon (along with co-author Michael Dean) provide an oral history of the influential company\, exploring not only the business side of the operation but the broader movement and acceptance of comics as an art form during the past 40 years. Those interviewed include a “Who’s Who” of American comics including Art Spiegelman\, Stan Lee\, Frank Miller\, Dave Sim\, Jim Shooter and more. \nThree time Eisner Award winner Tom Spurgeon is the editor of the online news site The Comics Reporterand Festival Director of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC).  He has written extensively on comics history and served as editor of The Comics Journal for five years.  He is based in Columbus. \nA signing in the Wexner Store follows the reading. \nCosponsored by Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

SUMMARY:New York: Ezequiel Garcia at Desert Island
DESCRIPTION:Argentinian cartoonist Ezequiel Garcia heads to Desert Island in Brooklyn to celebrate the release of Growing Up in Public. \n  \nAbout Growing Up in Public: \nIn the American debut of his graphic memoir\, Argentine cartoonist Ezequiel García explores the trials and tribulations of transitioning into his thirties as a working artist where the only thing more uncertain than the source of his next paycheck is the future of his hometown — Buenos Aires. García’s comics are influenced by the film\, architecture\, and rock music of the past\, but that source of inspiration is getting harder to find when big banks are taking over historic theaters\, cultural groups are facing hostile eviction\, and modern art is at an aesthetic all-time low. While several relationships blossom\, García struggles to accomplish his goal of getting published without becoming distracted by the accompanying drama. Like Lucy Knisley’s An Age of License spun with Moon and Ba’s Daytripper\, Ezequiel García finds meaning in autobiography and embraces all the promise\, panic\, and post–punk hallucinations that come with it. Garcia’s visual storytelling alternates among finely-crafted\, architecturally breathtaking depictions of Buenos Aires\, revelatory\, intimate selfexamination\, and phantasmorgical metaphorical flights\, drawn in nuanced\, expressive\, grungy brush strokes.

SUMMARY:Chicago: Trina Robbins at the SAIC
DESCRIPTION:The SAIC Painting & Drawing Department & Chicago Alternative Comics Expo co – present a lecture by Trina Robbins. \nIn 1970\, Trina Robbins produced the very first all-woman comic book\, It Ain’t me\, Babe. In 1972\, she was one of the founding mothers of Wimmin’s Comix\, the longest-lasting women’s anthology comic book. (1972–1992). In the mid-1980s\, tired of hearing publishers and editors say that girls don’t read comics and that women had never drawn comics\, she co-wrote (with Catherine Yronwode) Women and the Comics\, the first of what would become a series of histories of women cartoonists. She has been responsible for rediscovering previously forgotten early women cartoonists like Nell Brinkley\, Tarpe Mills\, and Lily Renee. Her new book\, Babes in Arms\, due out in Summer 2017\, collects the work of four Golden Age women who fought the Axis with pen and ink\, drawing comics that starred beautiful\, courageous women who didn’t need to be rescued by some guy. \nThis lecture is open to the public\, but non-SAIC attendees must have a state issued ID to check in with security upon entering the building. \n—— \nThe Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) is a weekend-long celebration of independent comics\, inspired by Chicago’s rich legacy as home to many of underground and alternative comics’ most talented artists– past\, present and future. Featuring comics for sale\, workshops\, exhibitions\, panel discussions and more\, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists\, small presses\, publishers and readers. \nhttp://www.cakechicago.com/

SUMMARY:Seattle: Jim Woodring Exhibit Opens
DESCRIPTION:Jim Woodring: The Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept\nJANUARY 21 – APRIL 16\, 2017\n\nAt once knowable and entirely strange\, the work of Seattle-based artist and cartoonist Jim Woodring (American\, born 1952) defies categorization\, shifting between graphic novel and fine art\, reality and hallucinatory vision. The Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept\, a series newly commissioned by the Frye Art Museum\, was created using an oversize dip pen designed and crafted by Woodring himself. The resulting ink drawings demonstrate the ways that unconventional tools can shape an artist’s practice\, generating new technical challenges in tandem with unexpected creative rewards. \nThese expansive compositions employ a visual language drawn from the artist’s dreams and imagination as well as from vintage American cartoons. In describing the curiosity that fuels his process\, Woodring explains\, “One common thread that runs through all my work is an interest in and a search for hidden forces—the invisible world. There is very much a questing\, searching\, seeking quality to everything I do. Each picture I draw is an attempt to answer one question and ask another one at the same time.” \nThe Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept is a purposefully absurd yet evocative title that hints at the enigmatic events depicted within the series. In each self-contained frame\, Woodring renders swirling amalgamations of phantasmagorical creatures and organic matter\, avoiding recognizable characters and narratives. In doing so\, the artist delves deeper into the surreal and fantastical universe that is central to his greater project. \nJim Woodring: The Pig Went Down to the Harbor at Sunrise and Wept is organized by the Frye Art Museum. Support for this exhibition is provided by Vulcan Inc. Additional generous support is provided by Seattle Office of Arts & Culture\, ArtsFund\, the Frye Foundation\, and Frye Art Museum members. \nMedia sponsorship is provided by City Arts.
