SUMMARY:Los Angeles: Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Last Bookstore LA is pleased to welcome local legend Robert Williams to celebrate the release of the new fine art collection\, Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination\, from Fantagraphics Books. This 484 volume is a comprehensive\, career-spanning collection of the iconic painter’s fine art\, including over 300 oil paintings as well as drawings\, sculptures\, and more. Simply put\, this is the definitive collection that Williams has been working towards his entire career. \nIn addition to hundreds of paintings\, drawings\, and sculptures\, Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination features an introductory essay by Coagula Art Journal founder Mat Gleason (who will interview Williams onstage at this event)\, a new foreword and annotations by Williams himself\, rare photos\, artifacts\, and ephemera. \nThis alternative art movement found its most apt participant in one of America’s most controversial underground artists\, the painter\, Robert Williams. Born in 1943\, Williams pursued a career as a fine arts painter for years before joining the art studio of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth in the mid-1960s. As the famous custom car builder’s art director\, he moved into the rebellious\, anti-war circles of early Underground Comix. In 1968\, Williams linked up with the infamous San Francisco group that piloted the flagship of the miscreant cartoon world\, Zap Comix. In 1994\, he founded Juxtapoz Magazine to celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art and confront the art establishment that is responsible for the emptiness and banality of most gallery- and museum-displayed art. He lives with his wife\, Suzanne Williams\, in Los Angeles. \nNote: This event is free to attend. A purchased ticket includes – and is the same price as – the book! I.e. you only need to purchase a ticket if you want to be guaranteed a copy of the book for the signing.

SUMMARY:Seattle\, WA: Gina Siciliano at SAM Gallery Talk
DESCRIPTION:My Favorite Things tours bring some of the most fascinating artists\, cultural producers\, and community figures into the galleries to discuss their favorite (or least favorite) works of art. This week’s tour will be led by Gina Siciliano on Thursday\, November 21st from 7 – 8 PM. \nIn September 2019\, Gina Siciliano released her debut graphic novel\, I Know What I Am\, depicting the life of the female painter\, Artemisia Gentileschi. The result of years of research exploring Gentileschi’s life story\, I Know What I Am paints a complex\, feminist portrait of Artemisia as a single mother\, a survivor of sexual assault\, and a pioneering practitioner of her craft. \nArtemisia Gentileschi’s famous painting\, Judith and Holofernes is currently on view in Flesh and Blood. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to view this and other renowned works of the High Renaissance and Baroque periods from the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. The exhibition reveals the many ways the human body can express love and devotion\, physical labor\, and tragic suffering. \nFree with gallery admission. Fourth floor galleries.

SUMMARY:Gainesville\, FL: Scott Camil at Matheson History Museum
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to welcome anti-war and environmental activist Scott Camil back to the Matheson to discuss his brand-new graphic novel “Winter Warrior” (Fantagraphics\, 2019)\, which was illustrated by cartoonist Eve Gilbert. A book signing will follow Mr. Camil’s presentation. \nThe year is 1965. Fresh out of high school and gung-ho to serve his country\, Scott Camil joins the marines and soon finds himself in the thick of combat in Vietnam. He can never forget what he witnesses there: corrupt and incompetent leaders\, the constant\, sudden death of his close friends\, the sadistic rape and slaughter of Vietnamese women and children—all of which bears heavily on his conscience. Returning to civilian life\, Camil adopts a righteous cause: tell the American people about what’s really going on in Vietnam. \nThrough the unflinching personal journey of a hardened marine turned dogged anti-war activist\, “Winter Warrior” reveals the brutal reality of the Vietnam war and the bleak political reality on the domestic front. Cartoonist Eve Gilbert renders Camil’s story with empathy\, nuance\, and a dash of humor\, her impressionistic imagery a perfect complement to his blunt words. As the American military continues to wage war throughout the globe\, Camil’s anti-authoritarian attitude and fearless whistleblowing is as vital today as it was then. \nScott Camil is a Vietnam veteran known worldwide for his anti-war and environmental activism. He made a name for himself as an outspoken participant in the boldly anti-war Winter Soldier Investigation in 1971 (and appeared in the 1972 documentary “Winter Soldier”)\, and subsequently joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and became a leader within the organization. Since 1987\, Camil has been President of the Gainesville Chapter of the Veterans for Peace. Also notable for his environmental activism\, Camil serves as Political Chair of the Suwannee St-Johns Sierra Club and founded Stand By Our Plan\, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting wetlands from commercial development. He lives in Gainesville\, Florida\, with his wife. \nThis event is sponsored in part by Visit Gainesville / Alachua County\, FL and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.on

SUMMARY:Brooklyn\, NY: Ben Passmore\, Jérôme Tubiana\, and Mark Alan Stamaty at Brooklyn Book Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:A psychedelic chronicle of 1970s New York paves the road for even trippier Washington D.C. satire; a meditation on casual bigotry feeds a gentrification horror story; and a daily conversation in an African hotel blossoms into the epic survival story of one of Guantanamo Bay’s youngest detainees. Ben Passmore (BTTM FDRS)\, Jérôme Tubiana (Guántanamo Kid)\, and Mark Alan Stamaty (MacDoodle Street) discuss the art of stepping outside reality in order to depict it. SUMMARY:New Orleans: Kate Lacour at Crescent City Comics
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Crescent City Comics August 24th at 6 PM for a signing of Kate Lacour’s newest work Vivisectionary! \nKate Lacour’s Vivisectionary is a series of visual sequential experiments in the physiological\, the pathological\, and the occult. A bizarre and mesmerizing investigation through the marvels of biology and myth to uncover the extraordinary in the ordinary\, the magic in science\, the sublime in the grotesque. Part art comic\, part surrealist textbook\, Vivisectionary is a delightfully grotesque mix of the mundane and the macabre. \nWhat if lactating snakes gestated inside fetuses? What if factory-farmed pigs were bred as giant\, insentient cubes? What if the human spine generated methamphetamine capsules? These single page sequential images illustrate these and many other marvelous\, hideous\, enigmatic physiological mysteries. Each comics sequence is stitched together (pun intended) by a narrative thread that forms a strange and mesmerizing voyage through the body.
