His Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2002) was named one of Time’s “100 Best Graphic Novels Ever Written\,” he has also been awarded an Eisner Award and an Inkpot Award for his work. His newest book is Reincarnation Stories (2019). Deitch remains a true cartoonists’ cartoonist\, adored by his peers as much as anyone in the history of the medium. \nGary Giddins joined The Village Voice in 1973\, and a year later\, introduced his column “Weather Bird\,” which ran through 2003\, garnering six ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for Excellence in Music Criticism. In recent years\, Giddins had contributed articles about jazz to The New Yorker\, Jazz Times\, The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, The Nation\, Esquire\, Vanity Fair\, and many other publications. He has received many awards for his work\, including a Peabody\, a Grammy\, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Born in 1943\, Williams pursued a career as a fine arts painter for years before joining the art studio of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth in the mid-1960s. As the famous custom car builder’s art director\, he moved into the rebellious\, anti-war circles of early Underground Comix. In 1968\, Williams linked up with the infamous San Francisco group that piloted the flagship of the miscreant cartoon world\, Zap Comix. In 1994\, he founded Juxtapoz Magazine to celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art and confront the art establishment that is responsible for the emptiness and banality of most gallery- and museum-displayed art. Thousands of South Florida schoolchildren will help kick off the Street Fair\, making the trip downtown Friday to hear authors and participate in Children’s Alley activities\, including theater\, arts-and-crafts\, storytelling and readings by children’s book authors. Comics and graphic novels are once again featured\, and a new section just for kids and teens\, as well as presentations over the weekend by renowned graphic novelists and illustrators. \nDuring Street Fair weekend\, November 22-24\, more than 250 publishers and booksellers exhibit and sell books\, with special features like the antiquarians\, who showcase signed first editions\, original manuscripts and other collectibles. \nThe first Miami Book Fair\, founded by Miami Dade College and community partners\, took place in 1984. Since then\, it has been recognized as the nation’s finest literary festival.

Fresh out of high school and gung-ho to serve his country\, Scott Camil joins the marines and soon finds himself in the thick of combat in Vietnam. He can never forget what he witnesses there: corrupt and incompetent leaders\, the constant\, sudden death of his close friends\, the sadistic rape and slaughter of Vietnamese women and children—all of which bears heavily on his conscience. Returning to civilian life\, Camil adopts a righteous cause: tell the American people about what’s really going on in Vietnam. \nThrough the unflinching personal journey of a hardened marine turned dogged anti-war activist\, “Winter Warrior” reveals the brutal reality of the Vietnam war and the bleak political reality on the domestic front. Cartoonist Eve Gilbert renders Camil’s story with empathy\, nuance\, and a dash of humor\, her impressionistic imagery a perfect complement to his blunt words. As the American military continues to wage war throughout the globe\, Camil’s anti-authoritarian attitude and fearless whistleblowing is as vital today as it was then. \nScott Camil is a Vietnam veteran known worldwide for his anti-war and environmental activism. He made a name for himself as an outspoken participant in the boldly anti-war Winter Soldier Investigation in 1971 (and appeared in the 1972 documentary “Winter Soldier”)\, and subsequently joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and became a leader within the organization. Since 1987\, Camil has been President of the Gainesville Chapter of the Veterans for Peace. Also notable for his environmental activism\, Camil serves as Political Chair of the Suwannee St-Johns Sierra Club and founded Stand By Our Plan\, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting wetlands from commercial development.
