SUMMARY:Brooklyn: Kevin Avery at BookCourt
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Avery presents his new release\, It’s All One Case: The Illustrated Ross Macdonald Archives. He’ll be joined by the book’s designer to discuss the process\, and works of Ross Macdonald. \nAbout the book: \nIn 1976\, the critic Paul Nelson spent several weeks interviewing his literary hero\, legendary detective writer Ross Macdonald. Beginning in the late 1940s with his shadowy creation\, ruminating private eye Lew Archer\, Macdonald had followed in the footsteps of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler\, but ultimately elevated the form to a new level. “We talked about everything imaginable\,” Nelson wrote—including Macdonald’s often meager beginnings; his dual citizenship; writers\, painters\, music\, books\, and movies he admired; how he used symbolism to change detective writing; his own novels and why Archer was not the most important character — “my God\, everything.” It’s All One Case provides an open door to Macdonald at his most unguarded. The book is far more than a collection of never-before-published interviews\, though. Published in a handsome\, oversized format\, it is a visual history of Macdonald’s professional career\, illustrated with rare and select items from one of the world’s largest private archives of Macdonald collectibles. Featuring in full color the covers of the various editions of Macdonald’s more than two dozen books\, facsimile reproductions of pages from his manuscripts\, magazine spreads\, and many never before seen photos of Macdonald and his friends (such as Kurt Vonnegut)\, including those by celebrated photojournalist Jill Krementz. It’s All One Case is an intellectual delight and a visual feast\, a fitting tribute to Macdonald’s distinguished career.

SUMMARY:Chicago: Anya Davidson at Quimby's
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the release of Band for Life with creator Anya Davidson at the beloved Quimby’s Bookstore in Chicago. \nAbout the book: \nBand for Life is the story\, told in comic strip form\, of a noise rock band and their community of friends and acquaintances based in an alternate reality version of Chicago. Though beset with disaster at every turn and frequently reduced to squabbling\, they stick together because the band is the fulcrum of their otherwise confounding lives\, and together they help each other find their way. Fusing elements of the classic British sitcom The Young Ones\, as well as classic kids comic strips like Charles Schulz’s Peanuts and John Stanley’s Melvin Monster\, Band for Life is a work of dark humor\, but also infused with genuine affection for its cast; in many ways it is a love letter to creative people compelled to create\, with no hope of financial reward.

SUMMARY:Toronto: Ben Marra and American Blood
DESCRIPTION:American Blood is the new collection from Ben Marra\, the definitive assembling of Marra’s most underground (and hardest to find) comics. Containing his provocative debut works including “Gangsta Rap Posse\,” “The Naked Heroes\,” “Lincoln Washington\,” “Ripper\,” and “The Incredibly Fantastic Adventures of Maureen Dowd\,” the new collection is perhaps more timely than ever as the lines blur ever greater between satire and reality. \nAmerican Blood will launch at a special event presented by The Beguiling and Suspect Video\, featuring an audio/visual presentation by Ben Marra and a moderated Q&A hosted by The Beguiling’s Alex Hoffman. The launch will also include a free screening of the trash-cinema classic SAMURAI COP (1991). following the Q&A. Marra’s American Blood will be available for purchase at the event\, as will a selection of his back catalogue and original artwork by Marra. \n“Born from the crucible of 1980s trash culture and exploitation entertainment and focused like a laser through the prism of Marra’s brain comes this nasty brew of revenge\, power\, and passion.”

SUMMARY:Brooklyn: Ted Stearn and The Moolah Tree
DESCRIPTION:Come to Desert Island to celebrate the release of Ted Stearn’s  (Fuzz & Pluck) newest book\, The Moolah Tree! \nAbout the book: \nPluck\, an irritable and featherless rooster\, and his best pal\, the awkwardly unsocialized but lovable teddy bear known as Fuzz\, met long ago in a garbage truck. A tenuous if decidedly co-dependent friendship followed\, sending them on a series of not-so-heroic adventures. But now\, we find them on a ramshackle barge\, slowly drifting out to sea. How did they get there? How will they escape? The answer lies in the book’s title\, but the true fun is in the Picaresque and often Swiftian adbsurdities that our heroes find themselves in along the way. Stearn’s work is rich with pathos\, wit\, farce\, existentialism and drama. Sometimes cruel but always funny\, like a Winnie the Pooh for adults. \nAs Simpsons creator Matt Groening says\, “This epic tale of a hapless li’l bear and his defeathered friend is why I love comics. All hail the peculiar Fuzz and Pluck and their creator\, Ted Stearn!” \n

SUMMARY:Toronto: Dash Shaw at The Beguiling
DESCRIPTION:The Beguiling is proud to welcome our long-time pal Dash Shaw\, creator of the graphic novels Cosplayers\, New School\, Body World\, and so many more for a very special signing at the shop! See Dash is in town because one of his comics has been turned into a film\, and it’s screening at The Toronto International Film Festival\, or TIFF\, from September 11th through the 16th! Hooray! \nHere’s where it gets super interesting: The film is screening at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema (around the corner) on Tuesday\, September 13\, at 4:00pm. So Dash is gonna come by a do a little signing and meet and greet at The Beguiling afterwards\, at 6:30pm! Go see the movie and then come get your books signed\, or pick up his new one COSPLAYERS\, or just say hi to a great guy who makes great comics (my favourite is BodyWorld\, but they’re all good). \nThe film sounds really great too\, check out the synopsis below! \nMy Entire High School Sinking into the Sea\nDirected by Dash Shaw\nUSA\, 2016\, 75m\nU.S. Premiere\nNo matter your age\, part of you never outgrows high school\, for better or worse. Dash Shaw\, known for such celebrated graphic novels as Cosplayers and New School\, brings his subjective\, dreamlike sense of narrative; his empathy for outsiders and their desire to connect; and his rich\, expressive drawing style to his first animated feature. Packed with action but seen from the inside out\, My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea is about friends overcoming their differences and having each other’s backs in times of crisis\, and its marvelously complex characters are voiced by Jason Schwartzman\, Lena Dunham\, Reggie Watts\, Maya Rudolph\, Susan Sarandon\, Alex Karpovsky and John Cameron Mitchell. w/ Synopsis courtesy Film Society of Lincoln Center.
