SUMMARY:New York City: MoCCA Arts Festival 2018

With 400 exhibiting artists displaying their work\, award-winning honorees speaking about their careers and artistic processes and other featured artists conducting workshops\, lectures and film screenings\, our Festival mission accelerates the advancement of the Society’s broader mission to serve as Manhattan’s singular cultural institution promoting all genres of illustration through exhibitions\, programs and art education.⠀ \nFantagraphics will be at Booth 163! Check out this schedule for a full list of who we’ll have signing books and when: \n  \n \nPanels: \n  \nSaturday\, April 7th \n3:30 pm / HELVETICA ROOM \nThe International Scene: Max de Radiguès and Anna Haifisch\nEvery comics culture — no matter how vast only presents and perceives a fragmentary view of global comics culture\, a rich field of diverse human expression that is interconnected in some ways\, and disconnected in others. International festivals and publishers can be sites for global exchange\, and individual artists who travel and work outside of their home countries help develop ties between comics cultures. Max de Radiguès’s graphic novel about his time at the Center for Cartoon Studies was part of the Official Selection at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée in Angoulême in 2012\, and his second English-language translation is forthcoming from Conundrum Press. He is additionally the co-publisher of the Belgian publishing house Employ du moi. Anna Haifisch is internationally known for her comics series\, The Artist\, and has published widely in many languages. Her book Von Spatz was recently published by Drawn and Quarterly. They will discuss their work and the international comics scene with Bill Kartalopoulos. \n  \nSunday\, April 8th \n  \n12:30 pm / GARAMOND ROOM \nJaime Hernandez: Locas and Legends\nIn 1981\, Jaime Hernandez\, with his brothers Gilbert and Mario\, substantially inaugurated the era of “alternative comics” with the debut of their series Love and Rockets. In the decades since\, Jaime Hernandez has developed a sprawling narrative world enfolding the L.A. punk scene\, the Mexican-American urban experience\, cosmic superheroics\, and the advance of middle age\, rendered in a fluid and informed visual style that places him among the master artists of the American comic book tradition. At MoCCA he launches his first book for younger readers: The Dragon Slayer: Folktales from Latin America (TOON Books). He will discuss his latest work and his career with Marc Sobel\, author of The Love and Rockets Companion. \n  \n12:30 pm / HELVETICA ROOM \nPolitical Cartooning: Now\, More Than Ever\nIn turbulent political times\, when the stakes are high\, a political cartoonist can visually dramatize complex situations and clarify core issues in artful ways. Just when we need them most\, political cartoonists\, like journalists\, find themselves in an increasingly precarious position in American culture. Nevertheless\, a cohort of dedicated artists continue to accept the challenge of commenting visually on current events. Marymount Manhattan College professor Kent Worcester will lead a discussion on contemporary political cartooning with Steve Brodner\, Mr. Fish\, Ann Telnaes\, and Eli Valley. \n  \n3:30 pm / HELVETICA ROOM \nWhy Nancy?\nFor decades Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy fired-up controversy: either readers loved it or…didn’t. With the publication of How to Read Nancy\, cartoonists and educators Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden have delved deeply into the mysteries of both Nancy and the mechanics of the comics language. Karasik and Newgarden will explore the deep attraction Bushmiller’s work continues to hold with an all-star panel of artists including Roz Chast (The New Yorker)\, Patrick McDonnell (Mutts)\, and Gary Panter (Songy of Paradise). \n  \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Chicago: Nicole Hollander at Women & Children First
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation with Nicole Hollander in celebration of her graphic memoir\, We Ate Wonder Bread. \nThis is veteran cartoonist Hollander’s first long-form work; her coming-of-age story\, starring the gangsters\, the glamorous\, the bed bugs\, the (enviable) Catholic girls\, the police\, the jukebox\, the fortune teller\, and the blue Hudson–the family car\, always at the ready for frequent drives into better neighborhoods. Not only does this illustrated memoir give insight into how Hollander developed her style and wit\, it’s a chronicle of a Chicago community that has since disappeared into an expressway. \nNicole Hollander is best known for her syndicated comic strip\, Sylvia. Her work has been archived in the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library at Ohio State University\, alongside Roz Chast’s\, Bill Watterson’s\, and other greats. She has published fifteen books and blogs at badgirlchats.com. She lives in Chicago.

SUMMARY:Twin Cities\, MN: The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists' Hustler Symposium
DESCRIPTION:It has been 30 years since the AAEC joined with Hustler’s Larry Flynt in defending satire and the First Amendment before the Supreme Court. Free speech supporters will celebrate this landmark case next year\, and use the occasion as a clarion call to confront new threats to satirists and cartoonists. Here is the press release: \nThe State of Our Satirical Union: Hustler Magazine\, Inc. v. Falwell at 30 \nSave the Date + Call for Papers \nThe State of Our Satirical Union: Hustler Magazine\, Inc. v. Falwell at 30 symposium will mark the anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court decision\, issued in 1988\, affirming the First Amendment right of editorial cartoonists and satirists to lampoon public figures. \nBut 30 years later\, satirists of all stripes are working in an environment that presents challenges to freedom of speech unimaginable when the unanimous court decided Hustler v. Falwell. There are calls to change libel laws to make it easier to sue the news media. Cartoonists and journalists face intimidation on social media platforms. Those same platforms make it possible for cartoons drawn in Buffalo\, Copenhagen\, or Paris to reach audiences in any corner of the world\, including places where insult laws and prohibitions on hate speech are the norm. In the era of Trump and Charlie Hebdo\, will Hustler’s protections endure? \nThe State of Our Satirical Union is sponsored by the University of Minnesota’s Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law. The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and some of its members are helping organize the symposium and will participate in many sessions. Held at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities\, on April 20 and 21\, 2018\, the symposium will explore the many dimensions of the Hustler decision\, including the history of the case and participation by editorial cartoonists and other First Amendment advocates as “friends of the court.” Leading media law scholars and editorial cartoonists will interpret the legacy of the ruling in the context of major political events and legal developments of the last 30 years. \nThe symposium will feature some of the country’s best-known editorial cartoonists\, whose work will be displayed throughout the event\, including Ann Telnaes and her work “Trump’s ABC.” \nThe Silha Center at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication will publish a special symposium book examining the significance and vitality of satire in American life today. Scholars\, media lawyers\, historians\, cartoonists\, comedians\, and others are invited to submit abstracts of articles\, essays\, and graphic art exploring these topics by January 16\, 2018. SUMMARY:Chicago: Georgia Webber Signing Dumb at Quimby's
DESCRIPTION:Toronto-based cartoonist Georgia Webber’s new book\, Dumb (Fantagraphics Books)\, Part memoir\, part medical cautionary tale\, Dumb tells the story of how the book’s author copes with the everyday challenges that come with voicelessness. Webber adroitly uses the comics medium to convey the practical hurdles she faced as well as the fear and dread that accompanied her increasingly lonely journey to regain her life. Her raw cartooning style\, occasionally devolving into chaotic scribbles\, splotches of ink\, and overlapping montages\, perfectly captures her frustration and anxiety. But her ordeal ultimately becomes a hopeful story. Throughout\, she learns to lean on the support of her close friends\, finds self-expression in creating comics\, and comes to understand and appreciate how deeply her voice and identity are intertwined. \nGeorgia Webber is a cartoonist living in Toronto\, where she is a freelance comics in addition to editing the comics section of carte blanche. She is best known for Dumb\, her autobiographical comics series about living with a vocal disability. \nFor more info:\nquimbys.com\nfantagraphics.com/dumb
