SUMMARY:New York: Julia Gfrörer Presents at NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 207th meeting of the NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium will be held on Tuesday\,  Feb. 13\, 2018 at 7pm at Parsons School of Design\, 2 West 13th Street\, in the Bark Room (off the lobby). Free and open to the public. \nJulia Gfrorer on “A Void Does Not Exist.” \nGfrorer discusses the effect of leaving negative space in a work and how useful a tool it can be for controlling the emotional tenor of a story. People have an instinctive dread of emptiness (“horror vacui\,” “nequaquam vacuum\,” “nature abhors a vacuum”) which means as creators we tend to avoid it\, but for a reader it can also be soothing\, hypnotic\, sensuous\, and magnetic. A void isn’t necessarily a “nothingness”: something happens because of it. She will give examples from her own work as well as work that’s influenced her. \nJulia Gfrörer is a writer and cartoonist. She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle\, WA\, and now lives on Long Island. She has published several handmade comics under her own imprint\, as well as two longer graphic novels\, Laid Waste and Black Is the Color\, with Fantagraphics\, a leading independent comics publisher. Her work has also appeared in numerous anthologies and publications\, including Cicada Magazine\, Arthur Magazine\, Kramers Ergot 9\, and two volumes of Best American Comics. She recently translated and illustrated excerpts from a medieval French heraldic text for 2dCloud’s MIRROR MIRROR II anthology\, which she co-edited with her partner\, writer Sean T. Collins.

SUMMARY:Berkeley\, CA: Ann Telnaes "Trump's ABC" Book Launch at Pegasus Books
DESCRIPTION:Pulizter Prize-winning political cartoonist Ann Telnaes presents Trump’s ABC: an all-new collection of scathing cartoons in children’s board book form (for adults). \n— \nThe Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Ann Telnaes has over the last 20 years skewered injustice\, inequality\, sham\, hypocrisy\, racism\, misogyny\, and corruption with her incendiary combination of elegance\, wit\, and moral suasion. Indeed\, from the Clinton years on\, no administration has been spared her fierce line and fiery indignation. \nOne Clinton\, two Bushes\, and an Obama were mere warm-ups for a President who is truly worthy of her excoriating satirical skills. The election of Donald Trump has inspired Telnaes to create a fitting response\, her first original book — Trump’s ABC\, a children’s board book for adults that chronicles the high points (or low points\, if there’s a difference) of Donald Trump’s first six months in office. Featuring sing-songy rhymes and beguiling watercolor drawings\, Trump’s ABC is a miniature critique and exposé of Donald Trump and his janissaries\, poltroons\, and dissemblers\, illustrating his public policies\, his personal defects\, his ethical dysfunction\, and the consequences of his Presidency on the lives of Americans — in a format that is cleverly designed to reflect the commander-in-chief’s attention span and mental level. \nAnn Telnaes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist who lives in Washington\, D.C. Her work appears regularly in The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Los Angeles Times\, Newsday\, and many other papers.

SUMMARY:Kilkenny\, Ireland: Gary Groth Interview with Tomi Ungerer
DESCRIPTION:A unique opportunity to see the award-winning documentary about the life and work of Tomi Ungerer in the company of the man himself\, followed by an interview with Gary Groth\, founder of Fantagraphics Books and editor-in-chief of The Comics Journal. \nFar Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story depicts one man’s wild\, lifelong adventure of testing societal boundaries through his use of subversive art. The film combines traditional documentary storytelling with original animation from over 70 years worth of art from the renegade children’s book author and illustrator. Using a historical palette of 20th century events to paint an artist’s epic yet controversial life story\, this HD documentary film offers a feature-length retrospective of Ungerer’s life and art\, pondering the complexities and contradictions of a man who\, armed with an acerbic wit\, an accusing finger and a razor sharp pencil\, gave visual representation to the revolutionary voices during one of the most tantalizing and dramatic periods in American history.

SUMMARY:Athens\, GA: Eleanor Davis at Avid Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Avid Bookshop presents local author and artist Eleanor Davis for her book WHY ART? This event will take place at our Prince Ave. location on Sunday\, February 25\, from 5:30 to 7pm. It is free and open to the public. \nWe encourage you to purchase a copy of this book and to get it signed at the event! You can purchase a copy of WHY ART? online\, here: http://www.avidbookshop.com/book/9781683960829 \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nWhat is “Art”? It’s widely accepted that art serves an important function in society. But the concept falls under such an absurdly large umbrella and can manifest in so many different ways. Art can be self indulgent\, goofy\, serious\, altruistic\, evil\, or expressive\, or any number of other things. But how can it truly make lasting\, positive change? \nIn WHY ART?\, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis (HOW TO BE HAPPY) unpacks some of these concepts in ways both critical and positive\, in an attempt to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve. A work of art unto itself\, Davis leavens her exploration with a sense of humor and a thirst for challenging preconceptions of art worth of Magritte\, instantly drawing the reader in as a willing accomplice in her quest. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nEleanor Davis is an American cartoonist and illustrator who creates comic works and other art for both adolescent and adult audiences. \nIn August 2014\, Fantagraphics Books published Davis’ first collection of stories HOW TO BE HAPPY. SLATE described the collection as “a mix of evocative\, geometric watercolors and fluid pen-and-ink cartoons\, HOW TO BE HAPPY tells stories of sad people\, lonely people\, strong people\, confident people\, all trying to find a tiny bit of happiness in life.” Upon the publication of HOW TO BE HAPPY\, comics critic Richard Bruton described Davis as “without question\, a major young creator.” \nDavis teaches comic book storytelling classes at the University of Georgia.

SUMMARY:New York City: MoCCA Arts Festival 2018
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Society of Illustrators’ MoCCA Arts Festival will take place April 7th from 11am-7pm and April 8th from 11am-6pm at at Metropolitan West (636 W. 46th St.) with programming mere steps away at Ink48 (653 11th Ave). Admission is $7. Programming is free with price of admission. \nThe MoCCA Arts Festival is a 2-day multimedia event\, Manhattan’s largest independent comics\, cartoon and animation festival\, drawing over 7\,000 attendees each year. With 400 exhibiting artists displaying their work\, award-winning honorees speaking about their careers and artistic processes and other featured artists conducting workshops\, lectures and film screenings\, our Festival mission accelerates the advancement of the Society’s broader mission to serve as Manhattan’s singular cultural institution promoting all genres of illustration through exhibitions\, programs and art education.⠀ \nFantagraphics will be at Booth 163! Check out this schedule for a full list of who we’ll have signing books and when: \n  \n \nPanels: \n  \nSaturday\, April 7th \n3:30 pm / HELVETICA ROOM \nThe International Scene: Max de Radiguès and Anna Haifisch\nEvery comics culture — no matter how vast only presents and perceives a fragmentary view of global comics culture\, a rich field of diverse human expression that is interconnected in some ways\, and disconnected in others. International festivals and publishers can be sites for global exchange\, and individual artists who travel and work outside of their home countries help develop ties between comics cultures. Max de Radiguès’s graphic novel about his time at the Center for Cartoon Studies was part of the Official Selection at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée in Angoulême in 2012\, and his second English-language translation is forthcoming from Conundrum Press. He is additionally the co-publisher of the Belgian publishing house Employ du moi. Anna Haifisch is internationally known for her comics series\, The Artist\, and has published widely in many languages. Her book Von Spatz was recently published by Drawn and Quarterly. They will discuss their work and the international comics scene with Bill Kartalopoulos. \n  \nSunday\, April 8th \n  \n12:30 pm / GARAMOND ROOM \nJaime Hernandez: Locas and Legends\nIn 1981\, Jaime Hernandez\, with his brothers Gilbert and Mario\, substantially inaugurated the era of “alternative comics” with the debut of their series Love and Rockets. In the decades since\, Jaime Hernandez has developed a sprawling narrative world enfolding the L.A. punk scene\, the Mexican-American urban experience\, cosmic superheroics\, and the advance of middle age\, rendered in a fluid and informed visual style that places him among the master artists of the American comic book tradition. At MoCCA he launches his first book for younger readers: The Dragon Slayer: Folktales from Latin America (TOON Books). He will discuss his latest work and his career with Marc Sobel\, author of The Love and Rockets Companion. \n  \n12:30 pm / HELVETICA ROOM \nPolitical Cartooning: Now\, More Than Ever\nIn turbulent political times\, when the stakes are high\, a political cartoonist can visually dramatize complex situations and clarify core issues in artful ways. Just when we need them most\, political cartoonists\, like journalists\, find themselves in an increasingly precarious position in American culture. Nevertheless\, a cohort of dedicated artists continue to accept the challenge of commenting visually on current events. Marymount Manhattan College professor Kent Worcester will lead a discussion on contemporary political cartooning with Steve Brodner\, Mr. Fish\, Ann Telnaes\, and Eli Valley. \n  \n3:30 pm / HELVETICA ROOM \nWhy Nancy?\nFor decades Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy fired-up controversy: either readers loved it or…didn’t. With the publication of How to Read Nancy\, cartoonists and educators Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden have delved deeply into the mysteries of both Nancy and the mechanics of the comics language. Karasik and Newgarden will explore the deep attraction Bushmiller’s work continues to hold with an all-star panel of artists including Roz Chast (The New Yorker)\, Patrick McDonnell (Mutts)\, and Gary Panter (Songy of Paradise). \n  \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Chicago: Nicole Hollander at Women & Children First
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation with Nicole Hollander in celebration of her graphic memoir\, We Ate Wonder Bread. \nThis is veteran cartoonist Hollander’s first long-form work; her coming-of-age story\, starring the gangsters\, the glamorous\, the bed bugs\, the (enviable) Catholic girls\, the police\, the jukebox\, the fortune teller\, and the blue Hudson–the family car\, always at the ready for frequent drives into better neighborhoods. Not only does this illustrated memoir give insight into how Hollander developed her style and wit\, it’s a chronicle of a Chicago community that has since disappeared into an expressway. \nNicole Hollander is best known for her syndicated comic strip\, Sylvia. Her work has been archived in the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library at Ohio State University\, alongside Roz Chast’s\, Bill Watterson’s\, and other greats. SUMMARY:Twin Cities\, MN: The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists' Hustler Symposium
DESCRIPTION:It has been 30 years since the AAEC joined with Hustler’s Larry Flynt in defending satire and the First Amendment before the Supreme Court. Free speech supporters will celebrate this landmark case next year\, and use the occasion as a clarion call to confront new threats to satirists and cartoonists. Here is the press release: \nThe State of Our Satirical Union: Hustler Magazine\, Inc. v. Falwell at 30 \nSave the Date + Call for Papers \nThe State of Our Satirical Union: Hustler Magazine\, Inc. v. Falwell at 30 symposium will mark the anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court decision\, issued in 1988\, affirming the First Amendment right of editorial cartoonists and satirists to lampoon public figures. \nBut 30 years later\, satirists of all stripes are working in an environment that presents challenges to freedom of speech unimaginable when the unanimous court decided Hustler v. Falwell. There are calls to change libel laws to make it easier to sue the news media. Cartoonists and journalists face intimidation on social media platforms. Those same platforms make it possible for cartoons drawn in Buffalo\, Copenhagen\, or Paris to reach audiences in any corner of the world\, including places where insult laws and prohibitions on hate speech are the norm. In the era of Trump and Charlie Hebdo\, will Hustler’s protections endure? \nThe State of Our Satirical Union is sponsored by the University of Minnesota’s Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law. The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and some of its members are helping organize the symposium and will participate in many sessions. Held at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities\, on April 20 and 21\, 2018\, the symposium will explore the many dimensions of the Hustler decision\, including the history of the case and participation by editorial cartoonists and other First Amendment advocates as “friends of the court.” Leading media law scholars and editorial cartoonists will interpret the legacy of the ruling in the context of major political events and legal developments of the last 30 years. \nThe symposium will feature some of the country’s best-known editorial cartoonists\, whose work will be displayed throughout the event\, including Ann Telnaes and her work “Trump’s ABC.” \nThe Silha Center at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication will publish a special symposium book examining the significance and vitality of satire in American life today. Scholars\, media lawyers\, historians\, cartoonists\, comedians\, and others are invited to submit abstracts of articles\, essays\, and graphic art exploring these topics by January 16\, 2018. The Silha Center will invite authors and artists whose abstracts are accepted to provide the final version of their submissions by March 5\, 2018\, and to participate in the symposium. \nFor further information\, or to submit an abstract\, contact Jane E. Kirtley\, Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law\, Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication\, University of Minnesota\, at kirtl001@umn.edu or 612-625-9038. \nThe Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law is based at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. Silha Center activities are made possible by a generous endowment.

The election of Donald Trump has inspired Telnaes to create a fitting response\, her first original book — Trump’s ABC\, a children’s board book for adults that chronicles the high points (or low points\, if there’s a difference) of Donald Trump’s first six months in office in a format that is cleverly designed to reflect the commander-in-chief’s attention span and mental level. \nFeaturing sing-songy rhymes and beguiling watercolor drawings\, Trump’s ABC is a miniature critique and exposé of Donald Trump — illustrating his public policies\, his personal defects\, his ethical dysfunction\, and the consequences of his Presidency on the lives of Americans.\n_________________\nAbout the Author: \nAnn Telnaes creates editorial cartoons in various mediums- animation\, visual essays\, live sketches\, and traditional print- for The Washington Post. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for her print cartoons and the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year for 2016. Her first original book\, Trump’s ABC\, was published this year by Fantagraphics.\n_________________\nAbout the Moderator: \nSteve Brodner is an illustrator\, caricaturist and political commentator working for publications in the US since the 1970s. He is accepted in the fields of journalism and the graphic arts as a master of the editorial idiom. After getting his BFA at Cooper Union in 1976 Brodner became editorial cartoonist at The Hudson Dispatch\, in Union City\, New Jersey. In 1977 he began a freelance illustration career that would span over four decades. He has contributed to the National Lampoon\, Sports Illustrated\, Playboy\, Spy\, and most major publications in the US and Canada.
