This series of character-driven\, musically minded stories is as graphically sophisticated as it is emotionally acute. Tied together by one central narrative about two teenagers who meet and fall in love after a Beatles concert in 1964\, I Am Young explores how relationships evolve — both interpersonally as well as our individual and collective relationships with the culture around us. A romance that begins as emphatically as Beatlemania is\, like the band that brought them together\, on the rocks by the end of the decade\, and although the ensuing years may put distance between the two\, their shared experience that one night in 1964 endures. \nThe evening will include a slide presentation\, conversation between M. and LA Times Book Prize-winning cartoonist Leslie Stein\, followed by a signing. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nM. Dean is a cartoonist and illustrator originally from the west coast of Florida\, where she attended Ringling College of Art and Design. She is the inaugural recipient of the Creators for Creators grant\, creator and co-creator respectively of the webcomics The Girl Who Flew Away and Coming Soon: Regents Walk. I Am Young is her first full-length graphic novel. Navigating a world that appears to be closing in on her seems more and more impossible. \n  \nGeorgia Webber is a cartoonist living in Toronto\, where she is the Comics Editor for carte blanche. She is best known for Dumb: Living Without a Voice\, her autobiographical comics series about living with a vocal disability\, published in book form by Fantagraphics in 2018. She’ll be discussing the intersection of comics\, art\, and self-care with Kriota Willberg\, author of Draw Stronger.

Special festival guests include legendary humorist and graphic novelist Mimi Pond (Over Easy\, The Customer Is Always Wrong); New York-based comic artist Whit Taylor (The Anthropologists\, Ghost\, online comics on TheNib.com); comic artist and educator Carol Tyler (A Soldier’s Heart\, Fab 4 Mania); German comic artists Olivier Schrauwen (Arsene Schrauwen\, Mowgli’s Mirror) and Anna Haifisch (The Artist\, serialized on VICE.com); up and coming French illustrator Antoine Maillard (as seen in the New York Times\, The New Yorker); Algerian illustrator Melek Zertal (Fragile\, also see in New York Times); and comic artist Rina Ayuyang (whose new book from Drawn & Quarterly\, Blame it on the Boogie\, will premiere at our fest). \nExperiential programming at the festival will feature a reading circle for kids with award-winning children’s book author Jessixa Bagley; an artist talk with Mimi Pond and Carol Tyler led by Phyllis Fletcher (NPR); a comics drawing workshop with beloved comic artist and teacher David Lasky; a literary showcase curated by Colleen Louise Barry (Mount Analogue\, Gramma); a Graphic Medicine workshop led by Whit Taylor and Meredith Li-Vollmer; Teen Zine table with foundry10 and Henry Teen Art Collective; Indigenous writers from the yəhaw̓ exhibition; revolving animated shorts assembled by Clyde Petersen and the Seattle Experimental Animation Team (SEAT); virtual reality simulation with foundry10\, art show featuring Chicago artist Jarad Solomon; Instax photo booth with Jazzyn Stone; live screen-printing postcard project with Fogland Studios; and portfolio reviews with The Center for Cartoon Studies and California College of the Arts professors (both offer MFA programs in Sequential Art). DESCRIPTION:Fantagraphics Books and the Frye Art Museum present a program to celebrate the launch of the new book Poochytown\, Woodring’s newest psychedelic graphic novel. Woodring will give a lecture on his new work followed by a conversation with Simon Hanselmann. Frank—Woodring’s beloved anthropomorph—has been subjected to hundreds of unbelievable adventures over the years\, yet nothing could prepare either him or the world at large for the transdimensional depredations of Poochytown\, the latest and greatest installment in the ongoing saga that began with Congress of the Animals\, began again in Fran\, and now begins anew. Q&A and book signing will follow. \nPoochytown will be available for purchase in the Museum Store\, along with other titles by Jim Woodring. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS\nJim Woodring was born in Los Angeles in 1952. He taught himself to draw in order to express his view of the world. He wrote and drew the first Frank story in 1992. He has also created a body of autobiographical material (collected in the book Jim) and allegorical puzzle-pictures (Seeing Things). Jim’s work has garnered him numerous awards\, including a United States Artist Fellowship (with Bill Frisell) in 2006; an Inkpot Award at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con; and most recently\, The Stranger named Jim their 2010 Literature Genius. He lives on Vashon Island in Washington State with his family and on jimwoodring.com. \nSimon Hanselmann (b. 1981\, Tasmania) is a New York Times best-selling cartoonist and spends his days meticulously watercoloring each page of the comics he hand draws. Simon has found international success with his stoner-witch comics\, Megg\, Mogg and Owl\, which have been translated into over a dozen languages.
