Maybe two translations per year receive wall-to-wall coverage\, but the rest get mentioned only on random long lists and niche blogs. This is a shame and a disservice—and not just to publishers and writers\, but also to readers. The challenges of translating one language into another make for some of the most fascinating and revealing stories\, raising fundamental questions of meaning and the possibility of actual connection with cultures other than our own. Some of those questions are bound to come up at the Northwest Literary Translators panel presentation on translating graphic novels and comics. Speakers include José Alaniz (who was instrumental in bringing Victoria Lomasko to town to talk about her incredible book of graphic journalism\, Other Russias)\, Melissa Bowers\, and Lola Rogers. Gary Groth\, cofounder of Fantagraphics\, will also join the conversation.

Vanishing Act is governed by one looping constraint that unifies all of the disparate threads: each following story starts in the middle of the previous one\, overlapping until the end of the night\, and back into the beginning of the book. \nRoman Muradov is an award-winning author and illustrator whose work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, The Paris Review\, Vogue\, and Lucky Peach\, among others. He has also designed books for Penguin Random House\, including the Penguin Classics Centennial Editions of James Joyce’s Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Schrauwen got his start in comics drawing for the Franco-Belgian magazine Spirou. Seeking more artistic freedom\, he soon left the magazine and published his work in a variety of alternative small-press zines. He came out with his first graphic novel\, My Boy\, in 2006\, and has since published three others: The Man Who Grew His Beard\, Mowgli’s Mirror\, and Arsène Schrauwen. Schrauwen’s work has also appeared in numerous comic anthologies including Fantagraphics Books’ Mome. He currently lives in Berlin.

Dean is a cartoonist and illustrator originally from the west coast of Florida\, where she attended Ringling College of Art and Design. She is the inaugural recipient of the Creators for Creators grant\, creator and co-creator respectively of the webcomics The Girl Who Flew Away and Coming Soon: Regents Walk. I Am Young is her first full-length graphic novel. DESCRIPTION:**Note\, this event will be at the new Politics & Prose location in Union Market. \nEntwining political and personal displacement\, Ali Fitzgerald’s graphic memoir\, Drawn to Berlin: Comic Workshops in Refugee Shelters and Other Stories from a New Europe\, is about loss\, community\, and the drawings that bind us. The students in Fitzgerald’s drawing classes are among the record-breaking number of people who are seeking asylum in Berlin\, fleeing from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan. They draw images of experienced violence and careful optimism: rafts and tanks\, flowers and the Eiffel Tower. Over the course of her decade in Germany\, Fitzgerald experiences the highs of the creatively hopeful along with the deep depression of the disillusioned\, all while waiting to stumble into her own glory like the great Modernists before her.
