SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Drew Friedman (Schtick Figures: The Cool\, The Comical\, The Crazy) in conversation with Kevin Dougherty (“Vermeer of the Borscht Belt”) at the Society of Illustrators
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of art and film as we celebrate the work of Drew Friedman with a special screening of “Vermeer of the Borscht Belt”. Before the screening Drew will be joined in conversation by the film’s director Kevin Dougherty. Afterwards there will be a book signing of Schtick Figures: The Cool\, The Comical\, The Crazy. The book will be available for purchase in the SI Museum shop ($29.99). Pre-inscribed posters will also be available for purchase ($15 cash only). \nGet your tickets here! \nThe Cool\, The Comical\, The Crazy: Schtick Figures \nStep into the world of Drew Friedman’s iconic portraits with Schtick Figures\, a captivating collection showcasing a wide range of famous and forgotten personalities. From comedians like Buster Keaton and Groucho Marx to musicians like B.B. King and Bob Dylan\, each portrait is a testament to Friedman’s unparalleled talent and keen eye for detail. \nVermeer of the Borscht Belt \nDelve into the fascinating world of Drew Friedman’s artistic evolution with “Vermeer of the Borscht Belt\,” a captivating documentary tracing Friedman’s journey from alternative comics to SPY magazine and beyond. Directed by Kevin Dougherty\, the film features interviews with R. Crumb\, Gilbert Gottfried\, Marc Maron\, Patton Oswalt\, and more\, offering a unique glimpse into Friedman’s creative process and the cultural influences that shaped his work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrew Friedman’s artwork has appeared in RAW\, Weirdo\, Heavy Metal\, National Lampoon\, SPY\, MAD\, The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, The New York Observer\, etc. In his NYT review of Old Jewish Comedians\, Steven Heller wrote: “A festival of drawing virtuosity and fabulous craggy faces. Drew Friedman might very well be the Vermeer of the Borscht Belt.” The Society of Illustrators hosted a main gallery showing of Friedman’s Old Jewish Comedians illustrations in 2014. The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum held an exhibition of the artwork created for his book All The Presidents in 2019. \nKevin Dougherty began his film career as a production assistant. During the making of “Bonfire of the Vanities” he incurred the wrath of director Brian DePalma after refusing to let him on set without proper identification. He spent the rest of the shoot guarding an empty parking space in an underground garage. He wrote and directed “Fuzzball” for Nickelodeon’s animated series “Ka-Blam!”\, and he created “Juanita & the List\,” an early web cartoon that racked up more than a million views. Dougherty has directed music videos and for more than a decade managed the Cafe Metropolis\, an independent music venue in Wilkes-Barre\, Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will take place in the Main Gallery. Bathrooms are only accessible via stairs. \nREFUND POLICY \n\nTickets are non-refundable. Tickets may not be exchanged for another event. If you are unable to use your ticket\, tickets may be converted to a donation by emailing info@societyillustrators.org.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: Stan Mack (Stan Mack's Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995) Book Signing at Skylight Books
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Stan Mack at Skylight Books! He’ll be presenting and signing his new collection\, Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995\, on June 27th at 7:00 pm. \nAbout the book: Sketchbook in hand\, Stan Mack haunted the New York City environs\, watching\, listening\, overhearing\, and interviewing its inhabitants. He drew a comic strip every week based on what he saw and heard\, famously using verbatim dialogue for his graphic dramatizations. A mixture of humor\, spontaneity\, serendipity\, and weirdness\, Mack’s comic strip snapshots caught New Yorkers — whether it is an extortionist calligrapher\, a baby evading arrest at her first protest\, a stroll up Broadway with a ferret\, an evening with a male liberationist\, or an unlucky-in-love dolphin trainer — being who they are in all their unguarded and uninhibited glory. \n

DESCRIPTION:Hey Seattle\, don’t miss a fascinating talk between Stan Mack and Gary Groth! They’ll be discussing Stan’s new collection\, Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995\, which Publishers Weekly said is “chock-full of stubborn individuality\, and the joy and pathos of urban life.” \nAbout the book: Sketchbook in hand\, Stan Mack haunted the New York City environs\, watching\, listening\, overhearing\, and interviewing its inhabitants. He drew a comic strip every week based on what he saw and heard\, famously using verbatim dialogue for his graphic dramatizations. SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: John Pham (J&K) Book Signing at Top Secret Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:“John Pham is the most artistically inventive\, generous\, and kindhearted cartoonist of his generation\, and J + K is one of the very finest graphic novels of the past decade. Needless to say\, I highly recommend this book.” — Chris Ware \n“A delightful mix of cute moments and ‘tragically sensitive’ bummers. Packaged as one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever seen\, Pham unites weird with wonderful. So weird\, that by the end\, you’ll think a pimple pus character named Bacne is adorable.” — Aminder Dhaliwal (Woman World) \n“Pham crafts a funny and surprisingly affecting story of two slacker friends and their marginal lifestyles. This jumble of gags and lovable and loving outsiders succeeds through sheer\, unrelenting weirdness.” — Publishers Weekly \n“A utopic psychedelic motley of Tove Jansson’s Moomin\, The Muppets\, Garfield and scenery on par with Hokusai.” — XS Noize \nDon’t miss John Pham at Top Secret Headquarters! He’ll be signing copies of J&K on July 7th from 2:00-5:00 pm. Can’t make it? Order a signed copy here!

SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Frances Jetter (Amalgam: An Immigrant\, His Labor Union\, and His American Family in Brooklyn) in conversation with Peter Kuper at The New York Public Library
DESCRIPTION:A uniquely told immigrant story\, Amalgam is populated by impressionistic figures\, rendered with piercing faces that stare down the reader as if out of an old photograph. The narrative follows Abram\, or “Abe\,” a Polish Jew who immigrates to America for economic opportunity. He is a passionate arbitrator and advocate in his union but an unyielding patriarchal tyrant at home. In a patchwork of linocuts\, keyholes\, and hinges\, Frances Jetter uncovers the convictions and contradictions that make up the tapestry of Abe’s life and so many others’. In these pages are mini epics depicting the struggle of workers; haunting vignettes of abandoned dolls and forgotten friends; and a love letter to Jetter’s mother\, Rose\, who hovers in the artist’s mind like a ghost. Twelve years in the making\, Amalgam is a profound\, multimedia meditation on memory and legacy. \n  \nFrances Jetter worked on Amalgam: An Immigrant\, His Labor Union\, and His American Family in Brooklyn during her 2017-2018 Fellowship at the Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. She will discuss her book with award-winning graphic novelist Peter Kuper. \n  \nTo join this event in-person | Please be sure to register for an In-Person Ticket. SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: Josh Simmons (Jessica Farm) + Patrick Keck (Crusher Loves Bleeder Bleeder Loves Crusher) Book Signing at Floating World Comics
DESCRIPTION:Hey Portland\, don’t miss Josh Simmons (Jessica Farm) and Patrick Keck (Crusher Loves Bleeder Bleeder Loves Crusher)at Floating World! \n  \nAbout Jessica Farm: Like a Lynchian take on Alice in Wonderland\, Jessica Farm opens with an exterior of what could be any Midwestern farmhouse. Once inside\, we track our titular heroine (she is a person\, not a place) as she bounds out of bed on Christmas morning and goes about her routine\, eventually breakfasting with her grandparents. The banality of the situation is subverted by a ratcheting sense of dread\, as we discover that Jessica’s increasingly nightmarish house — where the inside seems bigger than the outside\, like Snoopy’s doghouse — is filled with creatures around every corner: some whimsical\, some sexual\, some despairing\, and some malevolent. Most terrifying of all is Jessica’s father. Will she even get to open the presents under the Christmas tree? \nTaking place over a single Christmas Day\, Jessica Farm is a career-spanning comics project in which Simmons has been drawing one page every month for the past 24 years\, starting in January 2000. This is a horror-fantasy-psychodrama that will appeal to fans of Charles Burns\, David Cronenberg\, and Dario Argento. \nAbout Crusher Loves Bleeder Bleeder Loves Crusher: A boy loves a bug and a bug loves a boy\, but can a bug love a boy for more than his blood? The old-timers in Texas’s Erzsébet county say that nature don’t ask permission\, it feeds when it needs. But the bloodsucking bug in this here yarn got to thinking that nature ought not be absolute. Would you believe that this guy would rather dry up ‘n die than ruin another picnic by taking his thirsty fangs to the softest baby with the deepest veins? And would you believe\, just when he’s ready to die of thirst and turn to dust\, a sickly human boy named Thum — a kind-hearted crusher done crushin’ — finds our starving bug — a big-hearted bleeder done bleedin’ — and hatches a plan to invite this feederfly back to where he slumbers? \n‘Cause what difference does it make to a deep sleeper if you punch a hole real gentle and slurp-slurp real quiet? When the fully sated feeder’s kin catch wind of his safe space for suckling\, he realizes that there are matters more complicated than how and when to die. Does Thum’s frail frame house enough blood for the swarm or does devotion to the hive leave Thum a husk? How do you choose between those who are kind to you and those who are just your kind when one lives for the other’s suffering? Better pick quick\, little bleeder\, or you bet yer butt you’ll regret it. \n
