SUMMARY:New York City: How To Read Nancy - The Elements of Comics in Three Easy Panels by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden
DESCRIPTION:Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden will introduce their new work\, a unique meditation on the elements of comics as seen through the molecular deconstruction of the August 8\, 1959 daily episode of Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy. Columbia University comics librarian Karen Green\, will chat with Mark and Paul about the genesis of this decade-long project and the author’s quest to isolate the blood\, sweat and tears that go into the making of a single comic strip. \nHow To Read Nancy is part encyclopedia\, part history\, part biography\, part treatise\, part humor theory\, and part how-to-be-a-cartoonist-in-43-easy-lessons-sorry-folks-no-refunds! \nA book singing and reception will follow the presentation.

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: Shabazz Palaces and Joshua Ray Stephens at Floating World
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Ish & Joshua Ray Stephens\nWHAT: Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines release party and art exhibit\nWHEN: January 4\, 6-8pm\nWHERE: Floating World Comics\, 400 NW Couch St. \nQuazarz came to the Earth from somewhere else\, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. Somehow\, through fire or through fury\, the Palaceer of Shabazz Palaces caught wind of the tale\, and it is through his prism that we hear the story. And so the tale is told while surfing on the board of Shabazz Palaces\, with its sturdy base angled for takeoff on a new trajectory. Imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embers floating in the atmosphere like fireflies\, Shabazz Palaces recorded this entire album over the course of two weeks with Blood in Seattle. New gear and new equipment disintegrated comfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the ashes. \nIllustrated by cartoonist Joshua Ray Stephens this full-color\, 32-page book includes a download code for the full album. Joshua Ray Stephens worked directly with Shabazz Palaces to interpret the album track-by-track\, creating a cohesive whole that synchronizes music and image. Printed in a large 11” x 17” format\, with saddle-stitch binding\, this limited-edition art piece further expands the ambitious universe of Quazarz and Shabazz Palaces. The illustrated album version of Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines is being released in collaboration with Fantagraphics Books.

SUMMARY:Chicago: Tommi Parrish at Quimby's Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Cartoonist\, illustrator\, and art editor Tommi Parrish stops at Quimby’s with The Lie and How We Told It\, a book that has received praise from NPR\, Paste Magazine\, Sequential State\, and others. \nTommi Parrish is a cartoonist\, illustrator\, and art editor from Melbourne\, currently based in Montreal. Their work has appeared in various anthologies\, magazines\, mini comics\, gallery shows in New York\, Argentina\, and throughout Australia\, the online column Advicecomics and they were previously an art editor of the Australian literary journal The Lifted Brow. Their previous publications include Perfect Hair (2dcloud) and Perfect Discipline and Unbending Loyalty (Perfectly Acceptable Press). \nAbout The Lie: \nAfter a chance encounter\, two formerly close friends try to salvage whatever is left of their decaying relationship. They are in for an awkward\, painful night that leaves them feeling lonelier\, more uncertain\, and more estranged than ever before. Parrish’s first graphic novel for Fantagraphics is a visual tour de force\, always in the service of the author’s ever-prevalent themes: navigating queer desire\, masculinity\, fear\, and the ever-in-flux state of friendships.\nParrish makes emotionally loaded painted comics about everyday relationships\, doubts\, and anxieties. The psychological acuity in the work pairs perfectly to the graphic style. The Lie and How We Told It is a remarkably resonant work from an exciting new voice in contemporary graphic novels. \nMore info at quimbys.com

SUMMARY:New York: Julia Gfrörer Presents at NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 207th meeting of the NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium will be held on Tuesday\,  Feb. 13\, 2018 at 7pm at Parsons School of Design\, 2 West 13th Street\, in the Bark Room (off the lobby). Free and open to the public. \nJulia Gfrorer on “A Void Does Not Exist.” \nGfrorer discusses the effect of leaving negative space in a work and how useful a tool it can be for controlling the emotional tenor of a story. People have an instinctive dread of emptiness (“horror vacui\,” “nequaquam vacuum\,” “nature abhors a vacuum”) which means as creators we tend to avoid it\, but for a reader it can also be soothing\, hypnotic\, sensuous\, and magnetic. A void isn’t necessarily a “nothingness”: something happens because of it. She will give examples from her own work as well as work that’s influenced her. \nJulia Gfrörer is a writer and cartoonist. She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle\, WA\, and now lives on Long Island. She has published several handmade comics under her own imprint\, as well as two longer graphic novels\, Laid Waste and Black Is the Color\, with Fantagraphics\, a leading independent comics publisher. Her work has also appeared in numerous anthologies and publications\, including Cicada Magazine\, Arthur Magazine\, Kramers Ergot 9\, and two volumes of Best American Comics. She recently translated and illustrated excerpts from a medieval French heraldic text for 2dCloud’s MIRROR MIRROR II anthology\, which she co-edited with her partner\, writer Sean T. Collins.

SUMMARY:Berkeley\, CA: Ann Telnaes "Trump's ABC" Book Launch at Pegasus Books
DESCRIPTION:Pulizter Prize-winning political cartoonist Ann Telnaes presents Trump’s ABC: an all-new collection of scathing cartoons in children’s board book form (for adults). \n— \nThe Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Ann Telnaes has over the last 20 years skewered injustice\, inequality\, sham\, hypocrisy\, racism\, misogyny\, and corruption with her incendiary combination of elegance\, wit\, and moral suasion. Indeed\, from the Clinton years on\, no administration has been spared her fierce line and fiery indignation. \nOne Clinton\, two Bushes\, and an Obama were mere warm-ups for a President who is truly worthy of her excoriating satirical skills. The election of Donald Trump has inspired Telnaes to create a fitting response\, her first original book — Trump’s ABC\, a children’s board book for adults that chronicles the high points (or low points\, if there’s a difference) of Donald Trump’s first six months in office. Featuring sing-songy rhymes and beguiling watercolor drawings\, Trump’s ABC is a miniature critique and exposé of Donald Trump and his janissaries\, poltroons\, and dissemblers\, illustrating his public policies\, his personal defects\, his ethical dysfunction\, and the consequences of his Presidency on the lives of Americans — in a format that is cleverly designed to reflect the commander-in-chief’s attention span and mental level. \nAnn Telnaes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist who lives in Washington\, D.C. Her work appears regularly in The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Los Angeles Times\, Newsday\, and many other papers.

SUMMARY:Kilkenny\, Ireland: Gary Groth Interview with Tomi Ungerer
DESCRIPTION:A unique opportunity to see the award-winning documentary about the life and work of Tomi Ungerer in the company of the man himself\, followed by an interview with Gary Groth\, founder of Fantagraphics Books and editor-in-chief of The Comics Journal. \nFar Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story depicts one man’s wild\, lifelong adventure of testing societal boundaries through his use of subversive art. The film combines traditional documentary storytelling with original animation from over 70 years worth of art from the renegade children’s book author and illustrator. Using a historical palette of 20th century events to paint an artist’s epic yet controversial life story\, this HD documentary film offers a feature-length retrospective of Ungerer’s life and art\, pondering the complexities and contradictions of a man who\, armed with an acerbic wit\, an accusing finger and a razor sharp pencil\, gave visual representation to the revolutionary voices during one of the most tantalizing and dramatic periods in American history.

SUMMARY:Athens\, GA: Eleanor Davis at Avid Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Avid Bookshop presents local author and artist Eleanor Davis for her book WHY ART? This event will take place at our Prince Ave. location on Sunday\, February 25\, from 5:30 to 7pm. It is free and open to the public. \nWe encourage you to purchase a copy of this book and to get it signed at the event! You can purchase a copy of WHY ART? online\, here: http://www.avidbookshop.com/book/9781683960829 \nABOUT THE BOOK: \nWhat is “Art”? It’s widely accepted that art serves an important function in society. But the concept falls under such an absurdly large umbrella and can manifest in so many different ways. Art can be self indulgent\, goofy\, serious\, altruistic\, evil\, or expressive\, or any number of other things. But how can it truly make lasting\, positive change? \nIn WHY ART?\, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis (HOW TO BE HAPPY) unpacks some of these concepts in ways both critical and positive\, in an attempt to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve. A work of art unto itself\, Davis leavens her exploration with a sense of humor and a thirst for challenging preconceptions of art worth of Magritte\, instantly drawing the reader in as a willing accomplice in her quest. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nEleanor Davis is an American cartoonist and illustrator who creates comic works and other art for both adolescent and adult audiences. \nIn August 2014\, Fantagraphics Books published Davis’ first collection of stories HOW TO BE HAPPY. SLATE described the collection as “a mix of evocative\, geometric watercolors and fluid pen-and-ink cartoons\, HOW TO BE HAPPY tells stories of sad people\, lonely people\, strong people\, confident people\, all trying to find a tiny bit of happiness in life.” Upon the publication of HOW TO BE HAPPY\, comics critic Richard Bruton described Davis as “without question\, a major young creator.” \nDavis teaches comic book storytelling classes at the University of Georgia.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn\, NY: Eleanor Davis Book Signing at Desert Island
DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed cartoonist Eleanor Davis (How to Be Happy) for a presentation of her new book\, Why Art? \nWhat is “Art”? It’s widely accepted that art serves an important function in society. But the concept falls under such an absurdly large umbrella and can manifest in so many different ways. Art can be self indulgent\, goofy\, serious\, altruistic\, evil\, or expressive\, or any number of other things. But how can it truly make lasting\, positive change? Davis unpacks some of these concepts in ways both critical and positive\, in an attempt to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve. \nWhere: Desert Island Comics\nWhen: March 7th 7–9pm \nCan’t make it? Order the book here: http://www.fantagraphics.com/whyart/

SUMMARY:Montreal\, QC: Eleanor Davis "Why Art?" Book Launch at Librairie D&Q
DESCRIPTION:Join Eleanor Davis as she presents her newest book\, Why Art? A work of art unto itself\, Why Art? is part pseudo-serious artistic philosophy and part surrealist narrative that seeks to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve. In Why Art?\, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis (How To Be Happy) leavens her exploration of these concepts with a sense of humour and a thirst for challenging preconceptions of art worthy of Magritte\, instantly drawing the reader in as a willing accomplice in her quest. \nEleanor Davis has been honoured by the Eisner Awards and has won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. Her works include How to Be Happy (Fantagraphics Books\, 2014) and You & a Bike & a Road (Koyama Press\, 2017)\, and she contributed a short piece to the acclaimed comics anthology NOW (Fantagraphics\, 2017). She lives in Athens\, GA with fellow cartoonist Drew Weing.
