SUMMARY:Chicago: Jaime Hernandez at Quimby's Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Jaime Hernandez\, comics artist behind the long-running Love and Rockets series\, will be at Quimby’s Bookstore in Chicago to discuss his latest graphic novel\, This How You See Me? \nIn Is This How You See Me?\, Maggie and Hopey get the band back together — literally. Now middle-aged\, they leave their significant others at home and take a weekend road trip to reluctantly attend a punk rock reunion in their old neighborhood. The present is masterfully threaded with a flashback set in 1979\, during the very formative stages in Maggie and Hopey’s lifelong friendship\, as the perceived invincibility of youth is expertly juxtaposed against all of the love\, heartbreak\, and self-awareness that comes with lives actually lived. The result is no sentimental victory lap\, however — this is one of the great writers of literary fiction at the peak of his powers\, continuing to scale new heights as an artist. \nHernandez’s acclaimed ongoing comics series Love and Rockets has entertained readers for over 35 years\, and his beloved characters — Maggie\, Hopey\, Ray\, Doyle\, Daffy\, Mike Tran\, and so many others — have become fully realized literary creations. Is This How You See Me? collects Hernandez’s latest interconnected vignettes\, serialized over the past four years in Love and Rockets\, into a long-form masterpiece for the first time.

SUMMARY:Manhattan: Mort Gerberg on the Scene Launch at Book Culture
DESCRIPTION:01/30/2019 – 7:00pm \nJoin us at Book Culture on Columbus Ave as Mort Gerberg celebrates the release of his new book Mort Gerberg on the Scene on Wednesday\, January 30th at 7pm! \nMort Gerberg broke into print with irreverent drawings in The Realist in the early ’60s\, whose social-justice-minded—and bitingly funny—cartoons have since appeared in all major magazines\, including The New Yorker\, Playboy\, and the Saturday Evening Post. As a reporter\, he’s sketched historic scenes like the fiery Women’s Marches of the ’60s and the infamous ’68 Democratic National Convention. \nAbove all\, Mort Gerberg is a keen political and social observer\, whose curiosity\, compassion\, and razor-sharp wit has informed his work for over 50 years. Fantagraphics Underground is proud to present this handsome career retrospective of Gerberg’s magazine cartoons\, sketchbook drawings\, and on-the-scene reportage sketches. \n \n

SUMMARY:Los Angeles: Lawrence "RawDog" Hubbard signs Real Deal at Secret Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by magazines like Mad and traditional superhero comics\, Real Deal magazine was a self-published\, independent comic book created in the 1990s by Lawrence Hubbard (a.k.a “RawDog”) and H.P. McElwee (a.k.a. “R.D. Bone”). Peopled with a cast out of a blaxploitation movie ― convicts\, hustlers\, drug addicts\, crack whores\, car thieves\, and murderers ― these cult-classic comics straddle the line between satirizing and showing the harsh realities of urban life.

SUMMARY:Seattle: Gary Groth\, José Alaniz\, Melissa Bowers\, and Lola Rogers at The Seattle Athenaeum
DESCRIPTION:One of the great crimes of contemporary book culture is the lack of attention we give to translations. Maybe two translations per year receive wall-to-wall coverage\, but the rest get mentioned only on random long lists and niche blogs. This is a shame and a disservice—and not just to publishers and writers\, but also to readers. The challenges of translating one language into another make for some of the most fascinating and revealing stories\, raising fundamental questions of meaning and the possibility of actual connection with cultures other than our own. Some of those questions are bound to come up at the Northwest Literary Translators panel presentation on translating graphic novels and comics. Speakers include José Alaniz (who was instrumental in bringing Victoria Lomasko to town to talk about her incredible book of graphic journalism\, Other Russias)\, Melissa Bowers\, and Lola Rogers. Gary Groth\, cofounder of Fantagraphics\, will also join the conversation.

SUMMARY:San Francisco: Roman Muradov signs Vanishing Act at City Lights
DESCRIPTION:Author and illustrator Roman Muradov presenting a polyphonic play of interconnected stories from the new book Vanishing Act from Fantagraphics Books \nWritten and drawn in thirteen styles\, from comedy and confession to prophecy and interpretative dance\, Vanishing Act is a polyphonic play of interconnected stories\, synchronized in time and space on one melancholy evening. A paranoid man rehearses the upcoming party. A disheveled actor expounds on the conceptual potential of sitcoms. A beloved dog disappears into the Internet and starts a cult. A couple runs their argument in reverse. A bored seagull excretes the entire known universe. Vanishing Act is governed by one looping constraint that unifies all of the disparate threads: each following story starts in the middle of the previous one\, overlapping until the end of the night\, and back into the beginning of the book. \nRoman Muradov is an award-winning author and illustrator whose work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, The Paris Review\, Vogue\, and Lucky Peach\, among others. He has also designed books for Penguin Random House\, including the Penguin Classics Centennial Editions of James Joyce’s Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Muradov makes his home in San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles: Olivier Schrauwen signs Parallel Lives at Secret Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:From one of the world’s most celebrated cartoonists comes this unique collection of six wildly inventive short stories\, each a surrealist tour de force that might collectively be dubbed “speculative memoir.” Schrauwen’s deadpan depictions of his and his progeny’s futures are presented with such brio and conviction that even the most jaded reader will ask himself: was the author really abducted by extraterrestrials? Is he actually able to dialogue with agents from the future? Does he truly receive coded messages in envelopes at breakfast?\n\n\n \n\n\nParallel Lives resonates as something more than simply the overheated imagination of an artist creating freely — it glows and hums and pulsates like a portal to another reality\, and is the latest masterpiece in one of comics’ most distinctive bodies of work.\n\n\n \n\n\nSchrauwen will be at Secret Headquarters on Friday\, November 9th to discuss and sign copies of Parallel Lives. \nhttp://www.fantagraphics.com/parallel-lives/\nhttp://thesecretheadquarters.com/

SUMMARY:Chicago: Ali Fitzgerald at Quimby's Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Entwining political and personal displacement\, Ali Fitzgerald’s graphic memoir\, Drawn to Berlin: Comic Workshops in Refugee Shelters and Other Stories from a New Europe\, is about loss\, community\, and the drawings that bind us. The students in Fitzgerald’s drawing classes are among the record-breaking number of people who are seeking asylum in Berlin\, fleeing from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan. They draw images of experienced violence and careful optimism: rafts and tanks\, flowers and the Eiffel Tower. Over the course of her decade in Germany\, Fitzgerald experiences the highs of the creatively hopeful along with the deep depression of the disillusioned\, all while waiting to stumble into her own glory like the great Modernists before her. Her comics are compassionate and unflinchingly intimate\, as the fantasy of her bohemia crumbles in a globalized city. \n“Ali Fitzgerald has given us a beautifully crafted and sobering history lesson.” –Harry Bliss\, New Yorker cartoonist \nAli Fitzgerald is a comic artist and writer living in Berlin. SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: Olivier Schrauwen at Floating World Comics
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to host a book signing with one of our favorite cartoonists\, Belgian comics artist Olivier Schrauwen\, to celebrate the release of his new Fantagraphics book\, Parallel Lives. \nFrom one of the world’s most celebrated cartoonists comes this unique collection of six wildly inventive short stories\, each a surrealist tour de force that might collectively be dubbed “speculative memoir.” Schrauwen’s deadpan depictions of his and his progeny’s futures are presented with such brio and conviction that even the most jaded reader will ask himself: was the author really abducted by extraterrestrials? Is he actually able to dialogue with agents from the future? Does he truly receive coded messages in envelopes at breakfast? In spite of all rational perception\, and in spite of the author’s obvious predilection for cartoon surrealism\, Parallel Lives resonates as something more than simply the overheated imagination of an artist creating freely — it glows and hums and pulsates like a portal to another reality\, and is the latest masterpiece in one of comics’ most distinctive bodies of work. \nWHO: Olivier Schrauwen\nWHAT: Parallel Lives book signing and release party\nWHEN: Thursday Nov. 8\, 6-8pm\nWHERE: Floating World Comics\, 400 NW Couch St. \n“Olivier Schrauwen is extraordinary… He’s the most original cartoonist I’ve fallen onto since Chris Ware or Ben Katchor.” — Art Spiegelman \nOlivier Schrauwen (b. 1977\, Belgium) studied animation at the Academy of Art in Gent and comics at the Saint Luc in Brussels. Schrauwen got his start in comics drawing for the Franco-Belgian magazine Spirou. Seeking more artistic freedom\, he soon left the magazine and published his work in a variety of alternative small-press zines. He came out with his first graphic novel\, My Boy\, in 2006\, and has since published three others: The Man Who Grew His Beard\, Mowgli’s Mirror\, and Arsène Schrauwen. Schrauwen’s work has also appeared in numerous comic anthologies including Fantagraphics Books’ Mome. He currently lives in Berlin.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn: I Am Young Book Launch at WORD Books
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the release of cartoonist M. Dean’s gorgeous\, lusciously illustrated new book I Am Young. This series of character-driven\, musically minded stories is as graphically sophisticated as it is emotionally acute. Tied together by one central narrative about two teenagers who meet and fall in love after a Beatles concert in 1964\, I Am Young explores how relationships evolve — both interpersonally as well as our individual and collective relationships with the culture around us. A romance that begins as emphatically as Beatlemania is\, like the band that brought them together\, on the rocks by the end of the decade\, and although the ensuing years may put distance between the two\, their shared experience that one night in 1964 endures. \nThe evening will include a slide presentation\, conversation between M. and LA Times Book Prize-winning cartoonist Leslie Stein\, followed by a signing. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nM. Dean is a cartoonist and illustrator originally from the west coast of Florida\, where she attended Ringling College of Art and Design. She is the inaugural recipient of the Creators for Creators grant\, creator and co-creator respectively of the webcomics The Girl Who Flew Away and Coming Soon: Regents Walk. I Am Young is her first full-length graphic novel. She currently lives in Brooklyn with her partner\, a dog\, and a big black cat. \nPlease note that there is a $5 entrance voucher for this event which can be purchased online or at the door. The voucher is good toward anything in store at WORD\, including I Am Young. Please note that if you purchase the book directly from WORD at the event or via pre-order there is no need to purchase a voucher for admission.

SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Georgia Webber and Kriota Wilberg at McNally Jackson Books
DESCRIPTION:Dumb’s protagonist Georgia lives the relatively carefree and ordinary life of a twentysomething in Montreal: working at a café\, volunteering at a local bike co-op\, and going out on the town with friends. But when a sudden unanticipated throat injury forces her into months of silence\, her life is thrown into disarray. Unable to work her customer service job\, she must find new income. Conversing with friends becomes complicated and exhausting. And she is forced to give up a hobby she loves — singing! Navigating a world that appears to be closing in on her seems more and more impossible. \n  \nGeorgia Webber is a cartoonist living in Toronto\, where she is the Comics Editor for carte blanche. She is best known for Dumb: Living Without a Voice\, her autobiographical comics series about living with a vocal disability\, published in book form by Fantagraphics in 2018. SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Ali Fitzgerald at Desert Island
DESCRIPTION:During her eight years living in Berlin\, Fitzgerald spent a year and a half teaching the craft of illustration to asylum seekers from countries like Syria and Afghanistan – people who have often been targets of bigotry and hatred in both their native and adopted countries. Her powerful graphic memoir chronicles her experience with these extraordinary students\, telling both their stories and her own. Fitzgerald\, an artist who has exhibited extensively in Europe and the U.S.\, has had her comics regularly featured in The New Yorker\, New York Magazine\, and McSweeney’s\, and her book is a compassionate and intimate look at the empowering capacities of art\, capturing the highs and lows of a decade in an ever-changing European metropolis. \nAli will be at Desert Island Comics in Brooklyn on November 1st from 7-9m to celebrate the release of her new book\, Drawn to Berlin: Comic Workshops in Refugee Shelters and Other Stories from a New Europe.
