SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: M.S. Harkness (Time Under Tension) + Léonie Bischoff (Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies) + Caroline Cash (PeePee PooPoo #80085) at Floating World Comics
DESCRIPTION:Now’s your chance to see three talented artists present their incredible (and very different) books! M.S. Harkness\, Léonie Bischoff\, and Caroline Cash will be signing at Floating World Comics on November 5th from 4:00-6:00 pm. \nAbout Time Under Tension: M.S. Harkness is graduating from art school in Minneapolis and facing a crossroads in life. She has a strained relationship with her mother\, a sexually abusive father on parole\, and is in love with an aspiring MMA fighter who mostly hangs out with her to get high and already has a girlfriend and career prospects with a fight promotion. An art career feels untenable — as one professor tells her\, “Don’t expect to get by on this fucked-up broke girl shit.” She decides to get a personal trainer’s certificate — it seems like a feasible and sensible career option — but continues to dabble as a sex worker and weed dealer because the money is too irresistible. With idle hands due to no classes or full-time work\, M.S. has ample time to aimlessly fuck around — or\, to get her shit together. “I want to be better\, I want to be stable and solid. I don’t want to keep aimlessly shifting between untenable situations.” \nHarkness’s bold\, precise black-and-white cartooning and eye for storytelling invites the reader in\, while her sharp wit and naturalist ear as a writer takes it away from there. Never didactic\, always real\, Time Under Tension is a spirited and assured work of graphic memoir. \nAbout Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies: Anais Nin\, the author of works such as Delta of Venus and House of Incest\, is the patron saint of taboo-breaking pop culture sexual iconoclasts. Not only is she an inspiration for contemporary figures such as Madonna\, but her oeuvre\, which encompasses erotica\, autobiography\, essays\, short fiction\, novels\, and much more\, has been adapted into film (Henry and June)\, television (Little Bird)\, and other media. \nThe cartoonist Léonie Bischoff traces the life of the prolific writer in this lushly colored graphic novel. It begins with Nin struggling to reconcile the man she married (who had artistic aspirations) with the banker she finds herself living with in the Parisian suburbs. Soon\, her obsession with June Miller leads to inspiration. Nin’s life and art\, the truth and fiction\, are further intertwined as she recounts her many sexual liaisons including those with Henry Miller (whom she and her husband subsidize so he can write the controversial Tropic of Cancer)\, her psychoanalysts\, and even her father. Although Bischoff’s drawing is largely representational\, she occasionally depicts Nin’s sexual experiences in scenes as surreal as Nin’s own written portrayal of them. \nAbout PeePee PooPoo #80085: Caroline Cash’s gay\, modern take on the ‘60s underground comic continues! In this issue: Victoria’s Secret\, lesbians\, Chicago\, and more late-night bad decisions. \n

SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Anita Kunz (Striking a Pose: A Handy Guide to the Male Nude) in conversation with Mark Heflin at Society of Illustrators
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning illustrator Anita Kunz and Director of American Illustration and American Photography (AI-AP) Mark Heflin as they discuss Kunz’s new book Striking a Pose: A Handy Guide to the Male Nude. \nInspired by her own art students’ struggles and triumphs with nude life drawing\, Anita Kunz turned her brushes to nearly 150 speculative portraits of famous figures\, stripped of their vanities and as unpretentiously posed as life models. Alone or grouped\, male marvels and monsters and musicians stand\, lean and sit for the imaginary eye of the acclaimed painter and illustrator. \nLess directly comic or polemical than her previous Another History Of Art\, Striking a Pose nevertheless includes a feminist flip on the role of the nude model\, Kunz upends historical gender prejudices within the fine art world while also finding a welcoming humor in the bathos of the naked body. \nBooks will be available for purchase in the SI Museum Shop for a signing after the talk. \n$15 general\, $10 members\, $7 students and seniors \nAbout Anita: For forty years\, Anita Kunz has worked as an illustrator and artist who has been published all over the world. Her uncle Robert Kunz\, whose slogan was “Art for Education\,” had a significant early influence on her. \nHer editorial work frequently addresses political structures and issues of social justice\, reflecting her concern for the human condition. She contributed frequently to Rolling Stone magazine and produced cover art for a wide range of publications\, including The New Yorker\, Time\, Newsweek\, and The New York Times. Her particular painting technique fuses aspects of realism and surrealism to produce thought-provoking images that challenge our social perception. \nKunz recently published two books that explore gender politics: Original Sisters\, Portraits of Tenacity and Courage\, which features portraits of women\, many of whom have been marginalized or forgotten\, and Another History of Art\, which is a satirical examination of art history with a secular female twist. Additionally\, she has given numerous lectures in diverse locales including India and Istanbul. She has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada and received two honorary doctorates. She has experience working closely with monkeys and is an animal advocate. She has one human\, four pets\, and a home in Toronto. \nAbout Mark: Mark Heflin is the Executive Director of ICON The Illustration Conference\, having served since 2009. Prior to this appointment\, he was on the board of directors for ICON5 in New York in 2008. Heflin is also the Director of American Illustration and American Photography (AI-AP). Mark is a proud volunteer at God’s Love We Deliver in New York and sings with the Empire City Men’s Chorus.

SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Josh Mills + Ben Model (Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television's Original Genius) Screening and Panel at Anthology Film Archives
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL SCREENING! \nAnthology Film Archives and the Estate of Ernie Kovacs join forces to celebrate the publication of Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television’s Original Genius\, with an evening featuring a program of highlights from Kovacs’s TV career. \nThe influence of Kovacs’s highly visual and often patently surreal and Dada-esque comedic aesthetic can be seen not only in his offbeat sensibility but also in his radical editing and special effects techniques. Kovacs’s mark is apparent in everything from MONTY PYTHON’S FLYING CIRCUS\, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER\, PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE\, KIDS IN THE HALL\, and TIM AND ERIC AWESOME SHOW\, GREAT JOB!\, to the work of experimental film- and video-makers such as Owen Land\, William Wegman\, Michael Smith\, Trisha Baga\, and many\, many others. Ernie Kovacs utilized the “vision” in “television” more than any other comedian on TV in the 1950s and early 1960s. Surprisingly\, having no nightclub background and having come from radio\, his leap to television in 1950 unleashed a uniquely cinematic approach to comedy at a time when all TV was broadcast live. Kovacs was never popular enough to have a hit show but had a loyal following that allowed him to stay on the air\, bouncing from network to network throughout his career from 1950-62. His body of work was cut short when he died in a car crash at age 42\, but his impact remains immeasurable across the realms of television\, comedy\, and experimental media. \nFor the Anthology evening\, we’ll be focusing on some of the sketches and “sound-into-sight” music pieces that showcase Kovacs’s cinematic uses of the television medium as a canvas for his uniquely absurdist humor. The program will be hosted by the co-authors/editors/collaborators of Ernie in Kovacsland: Josh Mills\, executor of the Kovacs estate and son of Edie Adams; and Ben Model\, the archivist of the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams collection; and will feature a panel comprising Mills; Model; television writer\, author\, playwright\, and screenwriter Alan Zweibel (Saturday Night Live; It’s Garry Shandling’s Show; Curb Your Enthusiasm); television critic David Bianculli (NPR’s “Fresh Air”); and author\, MIT Professor\, and media historian Heather Hendershot (When the News Broke: Chicago 1968 and the Polarizing of America).

SUMMARY:Mercer Island\, WA: Garth Stein and Matthew Southworth (The Cloven: Book Two) Book Launch and Weenie Roast at Island Books
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Garth Stein and Matthew Southworth’s second installment of their graphic series The Cloven! Garth will be roasting weenies\, Matt will be drawing stuff\, and eventually they will answer questions about the book on a hopefully beautiful Seattle Sunday afternoon! Vegetarian options available of course. \nAbout the book: Author Garth Stein and cartoonist Matthew Southworth team up again for the second book in their action-packed coming of age series about a mutant from the Pacific Northwest! In The Cloven: Book Two\, Dr. Kenneth Langner\, a world-renowned geneticist and creator of the Cloven species\, reveals himself to Seattle Stranger reporter Jake Arthur\, who continues his in-depth research on the homeless encampment known as “the Jungle.” When Langner turns up dead the next morning\, Arthur realizes he’s into something far more sinister than he realized. Meanwhile\, in an effort to evade the para-military that have begun rounding up Cloven\, Tuck is taken to Halcyon Meadows\, a bizarre retreat of the true insiders — Supreme court justices\, ex-presidents\, movie stars\, rock musicians\, health gurus — those who are really in the know and who gather there every summer to worship goats. And to celebrate the existence of the first human/goat hybrid: The Cloven. And that’s when things really start to get weird. \nMoody and mysterious and atmospheric as a fever dream\, The Cloven is a raucous\, funny\, and dynamic sci-fi graphic novel series about James “Tuck” Tucker\, a genetically modified human organism known as a Cloven\, written by Garth Stein (The Art of Racing in the Rain) and drawn by Matthew Southworth (co-creator of the graphic novel series Stumptown)\, two of today’s bestselling and critically acclaimed storytellers.

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: Garth Stein and Matthew Southworth (The Cloven: Book Two) in conversation with Chelsea Cain (One Kick) at Powell's Books
DESCRIPTION:Author Garth Stein and cartoonist Matthew Southworth team up again for the second book in their action-packed coming of age series about a mutant from the Pacific Northwest! In The Cloven: Book Two (Fantagraphics)\, Dr. Stein and Southworth will be joined in conversation by Chelsea Cain\, author of One Kick.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn\, NY: K. Wroten (Eden II) Book Launch at Unnameable Books
DESCRIPTION:Hey Brooklyn\, don’t miss the book launch for K. Wroten’s incredible new book! \nA blistering critique of digital media and a kaleidoscopic depiction of consumer culture\, Eden II is both fanciful and satirical\, a combination of deft cartooning and virtuosic storytelling.\nIn the grungy\, punk-inflected world K. Wroten creates\, a cast of disaffected young characters struggle to find their purpose in life. Faced with a dying Earth and numbingly useless jobs\, protagonists Ellis and Dr. Otis Heck invent an immersive virtual reality game\, Eden II. But when Heck betrays Ellis and sells the game to a mysterious corporation\, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur. As each chapter highlights a new character in the ensemble\, the game’s impact grows as the world becomes consumed by fantasy. \nComing off the heels of their acclaimed queer comics Cannonball and Crimes\, Eden II is Wroten’s magnum opus\, establishing them as a breakout graphic novelist. Philosophical\, sarcastic\, self-assured\, Eden II is a vital work of the moment that positions Wroten alongside recent comics luminaries like Emily Carroll\, Caroline Cash\, Isabel Greenberg\, Melanie Gilman\, and Tillie Walden. Reminiscent of the stylized angst of Gregg Araki and Jamie Babbit’s works\, Wroten’s imagery in Eden II reflects the blighted pastiche of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker—and they have suffused that pastiche with a dark sense of humor and technologically enhanced moral ambiguity.

SUMMARY:Seattle\, WA: Josh Mills and Pat Thomas (Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television's Original Genius) in conversation with Gary Groth at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Calling all comedy fans: don’t miss this one-of-a-kind event! Josh Mills and Pat Thomas will be discussing Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television’s Original Genius\, their brilliant tribute to this trailblazer and his prolific creative output\, with our own Gary Groth at the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery! \nAbout the book: Best known for his wildly imaginative\, gleefully absurdist television show in the 1950s\, Ernie Kovacs (1919 – 1962) was also a notorious illustrator\, novelist\, essayist\, newspaper columnist\, and poet. In celebration of this cockeyed genius and his prolific creative output\, Fantagraphics presents a career retrospective featuring never-before-seen photos from Kovacs’s archive; excerpts of his magazine articles\, columns and books\, hand-notated TV scripts: a smattering of his “illustrated profuselies\,” the wacky improvisational sketches he drew on air; and more. \nCurated by Josh Mills (son of Edie Adams\, Kovacs’s wife and a performer on his show)\, Edie/Ernie archivist Ben Model\, and counterculture historian Pat Thomas\, the book offers a unique glimpse into the mind of a pioneering comedian. The first Kovacs book to be published in 30 years\, this impressive collection features previously unpublished Ernie photos\, drawings and writings\, vintage 1960s magazine articles reprinted for the first time\, and new essays by Ann Magnuson and Ron Mael of Sparks. Kovacs inspired countless comedians\, musicians\, humorists\, and writers in the latter half of the 20th century and beyond. He is cited as a direct influence by the creators and stars of such innovative comedy series as Saturday Night Live\, Monty Python\, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. An award in his name has been granted to uproarious humorists like Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) and Harry Shearer (This is Spinal Tap). A true visionary\, Kovacs’s iconoclastic approach has forever made its mark on the world of comedy.

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss an evening with Katie Skelly (The Agency)\, Miranda Tacchia (Unimpressed)\, and Natalie Norris (Dear Mini: A Graphic Memoir\, Book One) as these three incredibly talented artists discuss their newest books! Their work varies: The Agency is “modern underground comix at its best” (AIPT)\, while Unimpressed‘s sarcastic one-liners make for a “hysterically funny debut” (Library Journal)\, and Dear Mini is a vivid (at turns hilariously and uncomfortably so) depiction of adolescent agency in the face of trauma. But all three books capture the spectrum of feminine experience and feature bold\, unforgettable art. They’ll be joined in conversation by Kat Ball (Loose Frames) a book signing will follow the conversation! \nTickets can be bought at the door and are pay-what-you-can donation–we appreciate your support of the artists and the venue! SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: Josh Mills + Pat Thomas (Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television's Original Genius) Screening\, Q&A\, and Book Signing at the Billy Wilder Theater
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind event! On July 22nd at 7:30 pm\, the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum is screening some of Ernie Kovacs’ works\, followed by a Q&A and signing with Josh Mills and Pat Thomas\, authors of Ernie in Kovacsland: Writings\, Drawings\, and Photographs from Television’s Original Genius! \nAbout the event: During a tragically brief career marked by outré achievements\, of the endless credits that flashed across the cathode-ray tube bearing multi-hyphenate television impresario Ernie Kovacs’ name\, from writer to director\, to actor\, to producer\, the descriptors that perhaps best encapsulates his eternal mad genius on the small screen are surrealist and absurdist. A true broadcast pioneer\, Kovacs was both born into television and helped birth it. As a seasoned veteran of every network from ABC to NBC (with CBS and DuMont in between) and nearly every TV format possible (including his unorthodox game/panel show Take a Good Look)\, Kovacs is responsible for helping to define the medium in its formative years while simultaneously deconstructing it. \nOf the surviving moving image remnants of Kovacs’ oeuvre\, his conceptual kinship with the likes of Salvador Dalí are notably illustrated in the Saturday Color Carnival: “Ernie Kovacs Show” (1957) for NBC and the Ernie Kovacs Specials videotaped for ABC in 1961. These programs illuminate Kovacs’ gleeful defiance of television’s rigid genres and tropes that demanded canned laughs and cue card banter\, opting instead to forcefully break the fourth wall and constantly remind the viewer that they were staring at an electronic box with potential that was previously unconsidered. From the hilarious incongruity of shattering a TV taboo with misplaced sound effects in his color “silent show\,” to the medium-bending modernism of oscilloscope waves filling the screen\, to the tune of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “Mack the Knife” (warbled in its original German)\, at his most experimental Kovacs utilized TV as a primetime\, electronic audiovisual canvas and antidote to the vast wasteland. Or\, as expertly summed up by Edie Adams\, Kovacs’ gifted life partner\, fellow broadcast multi-hyphenate\, and posthumous rescuer of his nearly lost works: “[Ernie] saw laughter as a means of survival and created a television of the absurd as a fallout shelter.” \nJoin us for a screening celebration of the experimental works of Ernie Kovacs–more info here (link)! \nProgram notes by Mark Quigley\, John H. Mitchell Television Curator.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn\, NY: Natalie Norris (Dear Mini: A Graphic Memoir\, Book One) Book Signing at Desert Island
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss a book signing with Natalie Norris to celebrate the launch of her debut\, Dear Mini: A Graphic Memoir\, Book One! \nAbout the book: This debut graphic memoir (the first of two books\, with Book Two coming in 2025)\, is a bittersweet coming of age story that chronicles the author’s teenage experiences with sexual assault\, PTSD\, and resiliency. Dear Mini is not a cautionary tale\, however\, it is a vivid (at turns hilariously and uncomfortably so) depiction of adolescent agency in the face of trauma\, tracing Norris’s journey from wayward wild-child to harnessing her adult voice after almost a decade of silence. \nTold in the form of an illustrated letter to an old friend\, Dear Mini recounts the author’s experience going abroad to attend a language immersion program in France after her sophomore year of high school. She meets Mini\, an Austrian student who shares her predilection for illicit adventure\, and the two quickly form a bond that they expect to last well after they go their separate ways. But when Natalie visits Mini ten months after their last face-to-face\, something has changed. Their nocturnal exploits veer head-on into disaster. Norris’s spirited and free-flowing page designs and full color cartooning bring her frank voice and personality to life\, making Dear Mini one of the most compelling graphic novel debuts of 2023.

SUMMARY:Davis\, CA: Chris Wisnia (Doris Danger: Giant Monsters Amok) Book Signing at Bizarro World
DESCRIPTION:Catch Chris Wisnia signing copies of his new book\, Doris Danger: Giant Monsters Amok\, at Bizarro World! \nAbout the book: Written and drawn as dead-on homages to the styles of Jack Kirby\, Steve Ditko\, and Dick Ayers\, these 20 stories recount Doris’s encounters with such monsters as “Ner-Nee-Nah\,” “Spwum\,” “Ho-Chee-Cha\,” “X\, Son of XI\,” and many more. \nBut this is parody on a meta-level\, as “editor” Rob Oder takes you behind the scenes and reveals the secrets behind these comics — the chaos\, the “faster-faster/cheaper-cheaper” mentality\, the never-ending deadlines\, the despicable treatment of writers and artists\, the contempt for fans\, the blithe disregard for quality — all presented with an unctuous\, sunny veneer of jocular “sophistication” to readers. \nAnd that’s not all. Doris Danger: Giant Monsters Amok mixes its faux giant monster history with illustrations (“pin-ups!”) of giant monsters by actual comic book artists who wanted in on the fun: Arthur Adams\, Mike Allred\, Mark Bode\, Tim Bradstreet\, Jeffrey Brown\, Sal Buscema\, Geof Darrow\, Colleen Doran\, Michael Golden\, Irwin Hasen\, Gilbert Hernandez\, Mario Hernandez\, Peter Kuper\, Michael Lark\, Jae Lee\, David Mack\, Dean Motter\, Bill Plympton\, Esad Ribic\, Steve Rude\, Bill Sienkiewicz\, Chris Sprouse\, William Stout\, Herb Trimpe\, and Thomas Yeates. \nWe’ll let Stan Lee have the last word: “Chris Wisnia has performed the amazing feat of taking the minor masterpieces that Jack Kirby and I had done and looking at them through a carnival’s distorting mirror.” \n

SUMMARY:London\, England: Gilbert Hernandez (Love and Rockets) Book Signing at Gosh! Comics
DESCRIPTION:From Gosh!: \n“Love and Rockets is a part of Gosh!’s D.N.A. The monumental series by Los Bros Hernandez has been running for forty years\, only three years longer than we’ve been selling it! This is why we are excited to announce a signing with Gilbert Hernandez on Thursday 1st June 2023\, from 6-7pm. \nA Hernandez brother reaching these shores is not a regular occurrence so don’t miss out on this opportunity to meet one of the greatest cartoonists of our generation. Gilbert is the creator of the fictional rural Latin American town of Palomar\, where modern technology and rampant consumerism have yet to reach—or even phone lines. The focus of the Palomar stories was always the characters\, and as Love and Rockets popularity grew so did the scope Gilberts narrative universe\, from the interpersonal domestic dramas of his cast\, to serial killers and even adaptations of B-Movies starring Palomar’s favourite daughter\, Luba. More recently outside of Love and Rockets\, Gilbert has produced numerous stand alone titles\, BumperHead\, Julio’s Day\, Scarlet by Starlight and his ultimate exegesis of id and animus\, the heta-uma like Blubber (not for the faint hearted)! \nHere’s what publisher\, Fantagraphics\, say about Love and Rockets: \nIn 1982\, Fantagraphics Books published the first issue of Love and Rockets by the Hernandez brothers (Gilbert\, Jaime\, and Mario)\, and the series has since gone on to become the publisher’s flagship title\, a monumental work of graphic fiction. Collected under the umbrella of L&R\, the series is comprised of two separate ongoing stories: Gilbert chronicles the colorful inhabitants of the fictional Latin American town of Palomar\, while Jaime follows Latinx friends and sometime lovers Maggie and Hopey and their circle of friends in the punk scene of the fictional Californian town Hoppers. Over the course of L&R’s multi-decade run\, its characters have aged in real time\, lending these stories a depth and weight that few literary works achieve. The Hernandez brothers continue to release new issues of Love and Rockets. \nAnd on Blubber: \nThe great Gilbert Hernandez’s unfettered Id unleashed! Absurd\, explicit\, and profanely funny\, Blubber makes all other comics blush. \nDrawn from the first five issues of Gilbert Hernandez’s comic book series Blubber\, an absurdly X-rated showcase for the most surreally transgressive of Hernandez’s short stories\, weirdos (Blubberoo\, Mr. Elvis\, John Dick\, the Mentor)\, creatures (the Mau Guag\, Doogs\, and Orlats…)\, and anthropomorphs (the Cloarks\, the Kekeppy) visit places where most comics fear to go. Blubber veers between an absurdist satire of porn (and occasionally nature documentaries) and a celebration of unbridled hedonism\, serving as a defiant provocation to those unable to appreciate the difference between cartooning and obscenity. As R. Crumb said\, “It’s only lines on paper\, folks!” It is also a howlingly funny book\, filled with a rogues gallery of colorful comic book monsters (the Pollum\, the Junipero Molestat\, the mythical Forest Nimmy) and characters (T.A.C. Man\, Mr. Hippy\, Padre Puto\, the Snowman\, Baron Mungo\, Red Tempest) that echoes the sheer visual imagination of Jack Kirby. \nWe’re going to have an exclusive print straight from the covers of Blubber and signed by Gilbert too! We’ll have Gilbert here on Thursday 1st June\, from 6-7pm. You’ll be able to pre-order a signed copy of this print from our website for mail order or for collection by following the link here (link).”

SUMMARY:Seattle\, WA: Ho Che Anderson (Godhead 2) in conversation with Gary Groth at Ada's Technical Books & Cafe
DESCRIPTION:“Throughout his eclectic career\, writer and artist Ho Che Anderson has explored numerous genres and mediums to tell poignant\, expressive stories. Marvel fans might remember him as the author of Wakanda #3 or his short story in Amazing Fantasy #1000. Others might remember him from Fantagraphics’ iconic 1993 King\, the critically acclaimed biography of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.\, or his sci-fi epic Godhead\, which throws readers into a world where corporate scientists try to contact god and design killer robots. No matter where readers encounter Anderson’s work\, it’s sure to stick with them.” — Comic Book Resources \nHo Che Anderson is one of the most talented creators in the comics business! He’ll be discussing his newest book\, Godhead 2\, the stunning conclusion to his futuristic corporate thriller\, with Gary Groth\, the co-founder of Fantagraphics and The Comics Journal. \nAbout the book: In the second and concluding volume of Godhead\, GH2 picks up from where GH1 ended\, with Racer Calhoun and the rest of Cadre Zeus finally learning why they’ve been assembled: to destroy Oceanus\, the scientific facility traveling through the Pacific housing the God machine introduced in volume one. They undertake what they hope will be a routine intelligence gathering mission on Oceanus that turns into a desperate fight for survival through the city from which Racer had fled\, and leads to a reunion with Carys\, the great love of his life. \nFinally the cadre are ready to confront Oceanus and put an end to the God machine once and for all. The story’s finale upends the usual narrative expectations and concludes with a somber private epiphany that results in the triumph of human reason over a technocratic/supernatural savior. \nPart Boy’s Own adventure genre\, part men-on-a-mission yarn\, part formal playground through which the author can exercise his restless obsessions\, Godhead 2 is the action-based resolution to the psychological drama of the first volume.

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: Daria Tessler (Salome's Last Dance) Comics Reading and Signing with Sean Christensen at Floating World Comics
DESCRIPTION:“Tessler is a maximalist\, a subscriber to the more-is-more aesthetic\, yet her horror vacui approach never gets claustrophobic. Moments in [her work] will make even the sanest reader wonder if Tessler — whose previous\, shorter works illuminated ancient curses and the magical recipes of Albertus Magnus — knows something mere mortals don’t.” — The New York Times \nDon’t miss the launch party for Daria Tessler’s fantastical new book\, Salome’s Last Dance\, at Floating World Comics! She’ll be doing a comics reading with artist Sean Christensen and signing copies of her book on Wednesday\, May 24th from 5:00-7:00 pm. \nAbout the book: The Astounding Magnus has been hypnotizing audiences at the Feedbag cocktail bar with his resplendent dancing dog act\, Salome\, and her “Serpentine Dance of the Seven Veils.” Yet despite his success\, the pearl of life has lost its luster for Magnus. He visits the psychologist\, Dr. Silkini\, who promises to massage Magnus’s id into a higher dimension: the pearly gates of full life satisfaction. Meanwhile\, Salome’s crowd-pleasing performances have attracted unwanted attention from sinister forces who want to know the dog’s secret. \nDaria Tessler’s new graphic novella\, Salome’s Last Dance\, showcases her phenomenal talent for incorporating elements of collage and pen-and-ink illustration to create a beautifully phantasmagoric experience under the guise of an absurdist\, psychedelic fantasy (including an extended visual tour de force depicting a hallucinogenic tea trip)\, one that favorably compares to Yellow Submarine or the comics of Jim Woodring. Tessler’s rich ear for language and sharp sense of humor also liven every inventively stunning page of Salome’s Last Dance.

SUMMARY:Berkeley\, CA: Briana Loewinsohn (Ephemera: A Memoir) Book Talk and Signing at the Berkeley Public Library--West Branch
DESCRIPTION:“Loewinsohn debuts with an astounding graphic memoir of her coming of age amid her mother’s mental illness. … This powerful yet meditative work heralds the arrival of a promising creator.” — Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) \nDon’t miss Briana Loewinsohn’s event (co-hosted by Mrs. Dalloway’s Literary and Garden Arts) at the Berkeley Public Library–West Branch! She’ll be discussing her debut graphic memoir\, Ephemera: A Memoir\, and signing copies afterwards. \nAbout the book: Ephemera is a poetic and dreamlike take on a graphic memoir set in a garden\, a forest\, and a greenhouse. The story drifts among a grown woman\, her early memories as a child\, and the gossamer existence of her mother. A lyrical entry in the field of graphic medicine\, Ephemera is a story about a daughter trying to relate to a parent who struggles with mental illness. Gorgeously illustrated in a painted palette of warm\, earthy tones\, it is a quiet book of isolation\, plants\, confusion\, acceptance\, and the fog of childhood. Loewinsohn’s debut book is an aching\, meditative twist on autobiography\, infusing the genre with an ethereal fusion of memory and imagination.
