SUMMARY:London: Steve Weissman in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Steven Weissman will be here in conversation with Tom Oldham on Monday\, 23rd October\, from 7.30-9.00pm! \nWe first fell in love with Steven Weissman’s comics back in the days when he went by the pseudonym Ribs for his brilliant Peanuts-meets-Universal Monsters strip Yikes. Initially published by Alternative Comics\, the strips were collected and then extended into a series of books published by Fantagraphics. Along the way he also created the adventures of a pint-sized hero named Kid Firechief\, done in his signature style. \nBut then in 2009\, Weissman began a weekly strip about the surreal\, fictional adventures of Barack Hussein Obama and his family and colleagues. It’s a skewed take on modern America\, a satirical journey that begins as a series of four-panel strips\, but develops into an absurdist narrative that\, among other such flights\, sees the president reborn from a parakeet egg. \nCollected into a hardcover edition\, Barack Hussein Obama\, this was then followed up earlier this year with Looking For America’s Dog\, the story of Sasha & Malia Obama’s quest to find their dog Bo after Joe Biden leaves the Whitehouse gate open\, allowing the pooch to escape. As you might expect\, it’s a unconventional affair\, taking in global terrorism\, Kim Jong Un\, witches\, monsters\, Dennis Rodman\, and the prophetic fetus of Chelsea Clinton. \nNeed an explanation? Now’s your chance! Steven will be here talking with Tom Oldham (of Breakdown Press and these fair Gosh shores) about his working process\, career\, and what’s next. There will also be a chance for a Q&A\, and an opportunity to get your books signed!

SUMMARY:Evanston IL: Emil Ferris Talk at Chicago Humanities Festival
DESCRIPTION:Chicago artist Emil Ferris grabbed the attention of literary and art circles with her debut graphic novel My Favorite Thing Is Monsters. Ferris crafts a compelling tale that combines a coming-of-age narrative in 1960s Chicago\, Holocaust history\, a murder mystery\, and socio-political critique\, told by a 10-year-old protagonist who imagines she is a wolf-girl. In her distinctive cross-hatch style\, Ferris reproduces classic comic book covers and classic paintings. Damon Locks joins Ferris for a discussion of this daring\, original\, and very dark work.

SUMMARY:Austin TX: Mr. Fish: Cartooning From the Deep End World Premiere at Austin Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Having found success creating compelling\, and often\, adult themed editorial cartoons\, Mr. Fish may be the last great American outlaw artist. However his profession is on the way out. Editors previously willing to back controversial work are disappearing as fast as the newspapers which once employed him. Undeterred\, Mr. Fish meets his plight head-on and with an abundance of creative energy\, but the demands of raising a family overtake his freelance opportunities\, and Mr. Fish is forced to make devastating choices. This documentary follows the artist as he struggles to stay true to his creativity in a world where biting satiric humor has an ever-diminishing commercial value. \nHere’s your chance to see “Mr. Fish: Cartooning From the Deep End.” Its World Premiere will be taking place in the prestigious Austin Film Festival with filmmakers Pablo Bryant\, director and Ted Collins\, producer as well as Mr. Fish himself in attendance. Also joining us will be composer\, Steven Bernstein. We hope to see y’all there!

SUMMARY:Madison WI: Conversation with Paul Buhle and Paul Madonna at Wisconsin Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wisconsin Book Festival as Paul Madonna discusses his two new illustrated novels in conversation with Paul Buhle. \n  \nAbout Close Enough For The Angels: Emit Hopper was a one-hit wonder—twice. First as a rock and roller in the 80s\, then as a literary darling in the 90s. Now it’s twenty years later\, and despite his desire to remain a simple laundromat owner\, stardom has found him once again. As he’s drawn back into the limelight he meets Julia\, a former celebrity chef with an enigmatic past. But when she disappears while hiking with two other women\, Emit finds himself chasing down a mystery that promises to leave him forever changed. From the artist and author of All Over Coffee and Everything is its own reward\, Paul Madonna uses his signature blend of drawing and storytelling to deliver a beautiful and entertaining novel filled with suspense\, surprise\, and humor. With over one hundred lush and haunting drawings\, this full-length\, character-driven story is a fresh and innovative reinvention of the illustrated novel. \n  \nAbout On To The Next Dream: Paul Madonna’s popular comic\, “All Over Coffee” had been running for twelve years in the San Francisco Chronicle when he was evicted from his longtime home and studio in the Mission District\, ground-zero in the “tech wars” transforming the city. Suddenly finding himself yet another victim of San Francisco’s overheated boomtown housing market\, with its soaring prices and rampant evictions\, Madonna decided to use his comic as a cathartic public platform to explore the experience\, and to capture the complex\, highly charged atmosphere of a city—and a life—being forced through a painful transition. In a series of drawings and stories\, Madonna evokes the sense of vertigo induced by being forced from his home\, and the roil of emotions that ensue as he enters into the city’s brutal competition for a place to live. The line between reality and surreality begins to blur almost immediately\, in real life and in his comic. Absurd\, maddening\, and all-too-poignant\, these drawings and stories capture the spirit of not just San Francisco\, but a cultural epidemic that has now spread to cities around the world.

SUMMARY:New York: How to Read Nancy Lecture at The New School
DESCRIPTION:Cartoonists and scholars Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden use a single three-panel Nancy strip to explain how the medium of comics works. Everything that you need to know about reading\, making\, and understanding comics can be found in a single Nancy strip by Ernie Bushmiller from August 8\, 1959. Mark Newgarden and Paul Karasik’s groundbreaking work How to Read Nancy (Fantagraphics Books\, 2017) ingeniously isolates the separate building blocks of the language of comics through the deconstruction of a single strip. \nPaul and Mark will be discussing How to Read Nancy as part of the New York Comics & Picture-Story Symposium at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center on Tuesday\, November 14\, 2017 from 7 to 9pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: Shabazz Palaces and Joshua Ray Stephens at Floating World
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Ish & Joshua Ray Stephens\nWHAT: Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines release party and art exhibit\nWHEN: January 4\, 6-8pm\nWHERE: Floating World Comics\, 400 NW Couch St. \nQuazarz came to the Earth from somewhere else\, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. Somehow\, through fire or through fury\, the Palaceer of Shabazz Palaces caught wind of the tale\, and it is through his prism that we hear the story. And so the tale is told while surfing on the board of Shabazz Palaces\, with its sturdy base angled for takeoff on a new trajectory. Imbued with the energy and ideas from all the creative embers floating in the atmosphere like fireflies\, Shabazz Palaces recorded this entire album over the course of two weeks with Blood in Seattle. New gear and new equipment disintegrated comfort zones into dust and a new path appeared in the ashes. \nIllustrated by cartoonist Joshua Ray Stephens this full-color\, 32-page book includes a download code for the full album. Joshua Ray Stephens worked directly with Shabazz Palaces to interpret the album track-by-track\, creating a cohesive whole that synchronizes music and image. Printed in a large 11” x 17” format\, with saddle-stitch binding\, this limited-edition art piece further expands the ambitious universe of Quazarz and Shabazz Palaces. The illustrated album version of Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines is being released in collaboration with Fantagraphics Books.
