SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Anita Kunz (Striking a Pose: A Handy Guide to the Male Nude) in conversation with Mark Heflin at Society of Illustrators
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning illustrator Anita Kunz and Director of American Illustration and American Photography (AI-AP) Mark Heflin as they discuss Kunz’s new book Striking a Pose: A Handy Guide to the Male Nude. \nInspired by her own art students’ struggles and triumphs with nude life drawing\, Anita Kunz turned her brushes to nearly 150 speculative portraits of famous figures\, stripped of their vanities and as unpretentiously posed as life models. Alone or grouped\, male marvels and monsters and musicians stand\, lean and sit for the imaginary eye of the acclaimed painter and illustrator. \nLess directly comic or polemical than her previous Another History Of Art\, Striking a Pose nevertheless includes a feminist flip on the role of the nude model\, Kunz upends historical gender prejudices within the fine art world while also finding a welcoming humor in the bathos of the naked body. \nBooks will be available for purchase in the SI Museum Shop for a signing after the talk. \n$15 general\, $10 members\, $7 students and seniors \nAbout Anita: For forty years\, Anita Kunz has worked as an illustrator and artist who has been published all over the world. Her uncle Robert Kunz\, whose slogan was “Art for Education\,” had a significant early influence on her. \nHer editorial work frequently addresses political structures and issues of social justice\, reflecting her concern for the human condition. She contributed frequently to Rolling Stone magazine and produced cover art for a wide range of publications\, including The New Yorker\, Time\, Newsweek\, and The New York Times. Her particular painting technique fuses aspects of realism and surrealism to produce thought-provoking images that challenge our social perception. \nKunz recently published two books that explore gender politics: Original Sisters\, Portraits of Tenacity and Courage\, which features portraits of women\, many of whom have been marginalized or forgotten\, and Another History of Art\, which is a satirical examination of art history with a secular female twist. Additionally\, she has given numerous lectures in diverse locales including India and Istanbul. She has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada and received two honorary doctorates. She has experience working closely with monkeys and is an animal advocate. She has one human\, four pets\, and a home in Toronto. \nAbout Mark: Mark Heflin is the Executive Director of ICON The Illustration Conference\, having served since 2009. Prior to this appointment\, he was on the board of directors for ICON5 in New York in 2008. Heflin is also the Director of American Illustration and American Photography (AI-AP). Mark is a proud volunteer at God’s Love We Deliver in New York and sings with the Empire City Men’s Chorus.

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR: M.S. Harkness (Time Under Tension) + Léonie Bischoff (Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies) + Caroline Cash (PeePee PooPoo #80085) at Floating World Comics
DESCRIPTION:Now’s your chance to see three talented artists present their incredible (and very different) books! M.S. Harkness\, Léonie Bischoff\, and Caroline Cash will be signing at Floating World Comics on November 5th from 4:00-6:00 pm. \nAbout Time Under Tension: M.S. Harkness is graduating from art school in Minneapolis and facing a crossroads in life. She has a strained relationship with her mother\, a sexually abusive father on parole\, and is in love with an aspiring MMA fighter who mostly hangs out with her to get high and already has a girlfriend and career prospects with a fight promotion. An art career feels untenable — as one professor tells her\, “Don’t expect to get by on this fucked-up broke girl shit.” She decides to get a personal trainer’s certificate — it seems like a feasible and sensible career option — but continues to dabble as a sex worker and weed dealer because the money is too irresistible. With idle hands due to no classes or full-time work\, M.S. has ample time to aimlessly fuck around — or\, to get her shit together. “I want to be better\, I want to be stable and solid. I don’t want to keep aimlessly shifting between untenable situations.” \nHarkness’s bold\, precise black-and-white cartooning and eye for storytelling invites the reader in\, while her sharp wit and naturalist ear as a writer takes it away from there. Never didactic\, always real\, Time Under Tension is a spirited and assured work of graphic memoir. \nAbout Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies: Anais Nin\, the author of works such as Delta of Venus and House of Incest\, is the patron saint of taboo-breaking pop culture sexual iconoclasts. Not only is she an inspiration for contemporary figures such as Madonna\, but her oeuvre\, which encompasses erotica\, autobiography\, essays\, short fiction\, novels\, and much more\, has been adapted into film (Henry and June)\, television (Little Bird)\, and other media. \nThe cartoonist Léonie Bischoff traces the life of the prolific writer in this lushly colored graphic novel. It begins with Nin struggling to reconcile the man she married (who had artistic aspirations) with the banker she finds herself living with in the Parisian suburbs. Soon\, her obsession with June Miller leads to inspiration. Nin’s life and art\, the truth and fiction\, are further intertwined as she recounts her many sexual liaisons including those with Henry Miller (whom she and her husband subsidize so he can write the controversial Tropic of Cancer)\, her psychoanalysts\, and even her father. Although Bischoff’s drawing is largely representational\, she occasionally depicts Nin’s sexual experiences in scenes as surreal as Nin’s own written portrayal of them. \nAbout PeePee PooPoo #80085: Caroline Cash’s gay\, modern take on the ‘60s underground comic continues! In this issue: Victoria’s Secret\, lesbians\, Chicago\, and more late-night bad decisions. \n

SUMMARY:Bothell\, WA: Garth Stein (The Cloven: Book Two) Book Talk and Signing at Wanderlust Book Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss an evening with Garth Stein: he’ll be discussing his bestselling Cloven series at Wanderlust Book Lounge and signing copies after the talk! \nAbout the book: Bestselling author Garth Stein and acclaimed cartoonist Matthew Southworth team up again for the second book in this action-packed coming of age series about a mutant from the Pacific Northwest. \nIn the eagerly anticipated Book Two\, Dr. Kenneth Langner\, a world-renowned geneticist and creator of the Cloven species\, reveals himself to Seattle Stranger reporter Jake Arthur\, who continues his in-depth research on the homeless encampment known as “the Jungle.” When Langner turns up dead the next morning\, Arthur realizes he’s into something far more sinister than he realized. Meanwhile\, in an effort to evade the para-military that have begun rounding up Cloven\, Tuck is taken to Halcyon Meadows\, a bizarre retreat of the true insiders—Supreme court justices\, ex-presidents\, movie stars\, rock musicians\, health gurus—those who are really in the know and who gather there every summer to worship goats. And to celebrate the existence of the first human/goat hybrid: The Cloven. And that’s when things really start to get weird. \nMoody and mysterious and atmospheric as a fever dream\, The Cloven is a raucous\, funny\, and dynamic sci-fi graphic novel series about James “Tuck” Tucker\, a genetically modified human organism known as a Cloven\, written by Garth Stein (The Art of Racing in the Rain) and drawn by Matthew Southworth (co-creator of the graphic novel series Stumptown)\, two of today’s bestselling and critically acclaimed storytellers. \n

SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: Johnny Ryan (FATCOP) Book Launch at Secret Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Johnny Ryan at Secret Headquarters for the launch of his new book! FATCOP: upholding crime and corruption\, one fast food joint at a time. \nAbout the book: FATCOP never passes up a possible grift\, a chance to use excessive force\, or a pit stop at any chain restaurant he passes. He chafes when forced to take a new partner\, Pete Rick\, to keep him on the up and up. Even when he lucks into a heroic deed\, he manages to do so repulsively. But when FATCOP uncovers a child slave ring operating out of the local Trader Joe’s\, he may have met his match on the reprehensibility scale. If he’s not careful\, it might be a transformative experience that causes him to reconsider his role as a loving partner and father. Well\, up to a point\, anyway — sometimes a fat cop is just a FATCOP. \nJohnny Ryan returns to his lowbrow humor roots following his cult classic and violent fantasy series\, Prison Pit. Ping-ponging his antihero through an ever-escalating and cascading series of violent\, scatological\, and wildly imaginative absurdities (most but not all of FATCOP’s own making)\, Ryan’s brilliance as a visual and verbal gag writer shines on every page of this master class in physical humor and comics storytelling. FATCOP is as hilarious as it is profane\, and a welcome return to long-form comics by the cartoonist and animation veteran Johnny Ryan.

SUMMARY:New York\, NY: Beth Hetland (Tender) Book Signing at Forbidden Planet
DESCRIPTION:Get your copies of Tender\, Beth Hetland’s “nimble and unsettling graphic novel debut” (Publishers Weekly)\, signed at Forbidden Planet! \nAbout the book: Carolanne wanted a perfect wedding\, a perfect husband\, a perfect family. She carefully performs her own roles (gal pal\, bestie\, girlfriend\, wife\, and expectant mother) and in trying to enact agency over her life\, sacrifices it completely. Her desire to control the uncontrollable ultimately becomes her undoing. When things don’t go her way\, she exerts dominance over the one thing she does have total control over: her body; until that “betrays” her. After suffering a horrible loss\, Carolanne spirals into a literal\, all-consuming delusion that will engross comics readers and horror aficionados alike. \nChicago cartoonist and educator Beth Hetland’s graphic novel debut is a brilliant psychological thriller that tears down the wall of a genre — body horror — so often identified with male creators. Heady and visceral\, Tender uses horrific tropes to confront women’s societal expectations of self-sacrifice despite those traditional roles often coming at the expense of female sexuality and empowerment. \n

She’ll be discussing her debut\, Tender\, with her collaborator on the book\, Kyle O’Connell on March 30th at 3:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: Graham Chaffee (Light It\, Shoot It) Book Launch at Secret Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the book launch for Graham Chaffee’s first graphic novel in seven years! Light It\, Shoot It is a classic tale of noir below the spotlight. \nAbout the book: Fresh out of prison for an arson conviction\, clueless 20-year old Billy Bonney finds himself drifting through the seedy and unsavory world of cut-rate moviemaking\, even more out of place amongst his peers than he felt as a teen six years earlier when he got busted. Following his brother to the sets of grade B and exploitation 1970s Hollywood seems like a path of least resistance\, until he accidentally lands a job as a handler to a has-been actor. But the bright lights burn harsher and show more than he anticipated as he steps lucklessly into a gangster-driven plot to burn down a studio for the insurance money\, and finds himself in over his head. Drunken\, washed-up stars. Scrambling\, past-their-own-prime producers. Teenage girls on the make\, slick hustlers\, and violent fixers. Drawn in bold brushstrokes\, and hand-painted in subtle washes\, Chaffee brings vintage LA to the page in a propulsive adventure. \n

She holds an MFA (2011) from The Center for Cartoon Studies and BFA (2009) from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nPhoebe Gloeckner is a cartoonist\, a writer\, a trained medical illustrator\, and a professor at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. Her best-known works are the comics collection A Child’s Life and Other Stories (1998)\, and the genre-defying illustrated novel Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures (2002). She has long experimented with the form of the novel: Diary is a hybrid of prose and image\, and her current project\, which extends her focus on Juárez\, is a long-form\, multi-media work of experimental reportage. In 2008\, Phoebe Gloeckner received a Guggenheim fellowship for her continuing work on this project.

SUMMARY:Cranston\, RI: Rick Altergott (Blessed Be) Book Signing at The Time Capsule
DESCRIPTION:Rick Altergott will be signing copies of Blessed Be\, “a razor-sharp satire of conservative values\, bohemian ideals\, outlaw culture\, capitalism\, and more\, from a creator evincing a powerful\, if idiosyncratic\, vision of modern American life” (Library Journal Starred Review)\, at The Time Capsule on May 18th at 1:00-3:00–be there or be square! \nAbout the book: When Tom “The Acid King” Cottonwood is sentenced to prison for dealing\, he vows to exact revenge on the judge and all of Flowertown\, U.S.A. One year later\, when hillbilly Henry Hotchkiss violates the single principle binding the members of the local men’s group\, the 40 Acres Club — preserving his virginity — he proactively excommunicates himself to the woods in shame\, prompting his distraught best friend\, Doofus Anderssen (he of straw boater and Beatle haircut over a permanent five-o’clock shadow)\, to organize a community search. But little does he know that Cottonwood has been paroled and is making plans in those same woods to fulfill his destiny as “The Acid King” — in the form of a deadly act of terrorism he calls “Scorpio Rising.” \nAltergott’s farcical earnest cast of smalltown bums\, outlaws\, hippies\, bikers\, and babes — with names like Father John Beggarweed\, Stink Hair Stu\, Rubberneck Nelson\, Muttonchop O’Rourke\, et. al. — intertwine in a web of crime and mystery involving satanic ritual\, religious tracts curiously popping up around town\, naked fishermen\, and psychedelic drugs\, driving the narrative to ever-greater depths of hilarity (even though none of his characters are in on the jokes). Blessed Be reads like an R-rated Mad magazine parody of Our Town written by John Waters and drawn by Mort Drucker and Wally Wood. Altergott both skewers and celebrates an eerie realm of ’70s men’s magazines and small-town conservatism. A cult favorite since the 1990s amongst intellectuals and philistines alike for his impeccably crafted brand of lowbrow humor\, cartoonist Rick Altergott has never crafted a full-length graphic novel — until now.

SUMMARY:Seattle\, WA: Maria Bamford + Scott Marvel Cassidy (Hogbook and Lazer Eyes) Book Signing at Elliott Bay Book Company
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss a special meet-and-greet with Maria Bamford and Scott Marvel Cassidy\, the co-authors of the graphic novel Hogbook and Lazer Eyes. \nThis event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are not required but are strongly encouraged to help us plan for audience size. Please RSVP here. \nHogbook and Lazer Eyes tells the story of how newly single fortysomethings Maria Bamford and Scott Cassidy each signed up on the dating site OkCupid\, under the respective usernames “Hogbook” and “Lazer Eyes.” They went on a date\, and then another\, and soon\, despite a history of Bipolar II disorder and unhealthy relationships for each of them\, they fell in love and were married in 2015. We view all of this through the prism of their pug housemates\, including Blueberry and Bert (who has an unnatural obsession with Michael Flatley of “Riverdance” fame)\, and the elderly bonded pair Betty and Arnold (who recount their star turn as interplanetary canine scientists in the second season of Lady Dynamite). \nCassidy’s fine art training translates with ease into graphic storytelling\, with a naturalistic illustrative style that is a pitch-perfect match for Bamford’s comic timing\, making Hogbook and Lazer Eyes a beautifully illustrated love story\, told by some incredibly charming pugs.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: Stan Mack (Stan Mack's Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995) Book Signing at Skylight Books
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Stan Mack at Skylight Books! He’ll be presenting and signing his new collection\, Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995\, on June 27th at 7:00 pm. \nAbout the book: Sketchbook in hand\, Stan Mack haunted the New York City environs\, watching\, listening\, overhearing\, and interviewing its inhabitants. He drew a comic strip every week based on what he saw and heard\, famously using verbatim dialogue for his graphic dramatizations. A mixture of humor\, spontaneity\, serendipity\, and weirdness\, Mack’s comic strip snapshots caught New Yorkers — whether it is an extortionist calligrapher\, a baby evading arrest at her first protest\, a stroll up Broadway with a ferret\, an evening with a male liberationist\, or an unlucky-in-love dolphin trainer — being who they are in all their unguarded and uninhibited glory. \n

SUMMARY:Seattle\, WA: Stan Mack (Stan Mack's Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995) in conversation with Gary Groth at the Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Hey Seattle\, don’t miss a fascinating talk between Stan Mack and Gary Groth! They’ll be discussing Stan’s new collection\, Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies: The Collected Conceits\, Delusions\, and Hijinks of New Yorkers from 1974 to 1995\, which Publishers Weekly said is “chock-full of stubborn individuality\, and the joy and pathos of urban life.” \nAbout the book: Sketchbook in hand\, Stan Mack haunted the New York City environs\, watching\, listening\, overhearing\, and interviewing its inhabitants. \n

SUMMARY:Los Angeles\, CA: John Pham (J&K) Book Signing at Top Secret Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:“John Pham is the most artistically inventive\, generous\, and kindhearted cartoonist of his generation\, and J + K is one of the very finest graphic novels of the past decade. Needless to say\, I highly recommend this book.” — Chris Ware \n“A delightful mix of cute moments and ‘tragically sensitive’ bummers. Packaged as one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever seen\, Pham unites weird with wonderful. So weird\, that by the end\, you’ll think a pimple pus character named Bacne is adorable.” — Aminder Dhaliwal (Woman World) \n“Pham crafts a funny and surprisingly affecting story of two slacker friends and their marginal lifestyles. This jumble of gags and lovable and loving outsiders succeeds through sheer\, unrelenting weirdness.” — Publishers Weekly \n“A utopic psychedelic motley of Tove Jansson’s Moomin\, The Muppets\, Garfield and scenery on par with Hokusai.” — XS Noize \nDon’t miss John Pham at Top Secret Headquarters! He’ll be signing copies of J&K on July 7th from 2:00-5:00 pm. Can’t make it? Order a signed copy here!
