Join us on Saturday Septemeber 8 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Fantagraphics Bookstore as Seattle cartoonist David Lasky discusses his forthcoming Georgetown Steamplant graphic novel (in collaboration with writer Mairead Case) and discuss their approach to the project, scheduled for publication in fall of 2019. This is the first graphic novel funded by the City of Seattle’s public art program. Bookstore curator Larry Reid served on the panel that selected Lasky from more that 70 applicants. Lasky will publish a minicomic preview of the project to distribute free while supplies last.
Interactive artist Jake Fennell will present “Reality is Mutable,” an installation employing 3-D spherical video technology and virtual reality goggles to create an immersive, surrealistic tour of the Georgetown Steamplant. The evening includes a screening of The Last Blast: Big Black at the Georgetown Steamplant, which documents the legendary final show by influential Chicago industrial band Big Black on August 9, 1987, produced by Fantagraphics Bookstore curator Larry Reid. The film includes performances by Jesse Bernstein and Roland Barker.
This event coincides with the monthly Georgetown Art Attack featuring colorful contemporary visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic neighborhood, including the festive San Genarro Italian Street Fair and a free performance of new work next door at the Nine Pound Hammer by Dan Stuart, founding member of Green on Red and pivotal figure in the 80s Paisley Underground movement, among many other attractions.
On Wednesday, September 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM we welcome cartoonist and musician Nick Thorburn presenting his debut graphic novel Penguins with an exhibition of original art, book signing, and solo music set. Thorburn was a member of acclaimed indie rock groups like The Unicorns, Islands, and Human Highway. Of his book, the artist observes, “Penguins go through a lot of hell that could be avoided if they had the ability to fly. This cruel irony lends itself to humor, as well as sadness. Death and the desperate search for love and companionship seem so tethered to life as a penguin, as well as for humans, and so the goal was to bridge those two and make them funny.” Meet this exceptional artist and enjoy his music in the intimate environment of Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S.
